Autumn 1 in Year R
What a half term! All those transition days and home visits feel like an absolute lifetime ago as we sit and reflect on the last few weeks of Autumn 1. This half term has been all about two important aspects of learning: relationships and routines. Starting with relationships, the children have had lots of opportunities to get to know their classmates, learning names and faces as well as practising the all-important skills of how to happily communicate and play together. It has been really wonderful seeing the team work, confidence and collaboration starting to shine through as the children develop new connections with their peers. Equally, the children have been getting to know the adults in Year R. This has happened through lots of opportunities for play, story telling and conversation. We have loved getting to know the children and their wonderful personalities and we know we are in for a fantastic year. Next, the big one - routines! Every part of the school day is a new routine to be learnt, memorised and practised. It is easy for us adults to take for granted all that goes into coming into school, putting things away, where to sit and when, who to go to and when, what snack and lunch and tidy up time looks like as well as remembering who and what everything is. What a lot to think about! The children have been absolute super stars when it comes to listening and taking ownership of their daily routines, helping to support a calm and ready state throughout the day.
Maths:
Matching sets, comparing objects, following patterns, heavier and lighter, bigger and smaller, subitising 1,2,3 and identifying 1 more and 1 less
A huge number of concepts covered this half-term in our Maths sessions altogether on the carpet. These have raised real discussion points and further exploration opportunities in our continuous provision.
Literacy skills:
New phonics sounds, oral blending, name recognition, pre-letter formation and the start of some actual letter formation, lots of fine motor and gross motor practice, storytelling and vocabulary building.
We have really loved the enthusiasm that the children have been showing in our Phonics sessions and the feedback that they have been practising really hard at home too. We are very proud of how far they have come in such a short space of time. Drawing Club has been a HUGE hit as the children have full freedom to be as imaginative and creative as they can possibly be.
The learning in the provision has been incredibly varied, ranging from autumnal veg races down the water pipes to pizza shops being opened up in the classroom. We have had such fun building an engaging environment for the children to have the space and opportunity to explore and learn, and we are very, very proud of them for their efforts.
Welcome to Year R
Welcome to our Year R page.
We are so excited to welcome our lovely new Year R children to Great Binfields! We have enjoyed starting some Home Visits, and seeing the children for their settling in sessions. We have been blown away with how well they are doing, playing with each other, communicating with the adults and exploring the environment. During this term, we look forward to getting to know all about the children’s interests and abilities. Our topic is all things ‘Autumn’ and we will also spend time talking about our families, our likes and dislikes and what is the same or different between us and our friends.
