Year 1 has had a fantastic start to the academic year! The children have settled brilliantly into their new classroom routines and have shown enthusiasm, curiosity and a wonderful attitude towards learning. We have also been super impressed with how the children have all transitioned from continuous provision into a more structured timetable.
For our autumn topic 'Me and My World', we have been looking at personal timelines in history, which has been a great way for the children to get to know each other and for us to get to know them too. We have also had great fun in science learning about the five senses. The children particularly enjoyed a senses walk around the school grounds, playing a sound bingo game and taking part in a crisps smell test (especially when it was time to eat the crisps afterwards!)
We've been learning all about sequencing in English through our focus stories of The Three Little Pigs and The Tiger Who Came to Tea. We even hosted our own tea party, just like Sophie and the Tiger in the story! More recently, we have been using our focus story Sudden Hill to develop our sentence writing. The children have been working hard to write complete sentences, remembering to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops correctly. It has been fantastic to see the progress the children have made and their growing confidence as writers.
There has been lots of exciting learning taking place in Maths this half term. The children have explored one more and one less, practised counting in 10s and developed their understanding of sequencing by ordering numbers and events. They have also been learning about money, measurement and number bonds to 10 and 20, as well as building their confidence with addition and subtraction.
Beyond this, the children have enjoyed a wide range of learning opportunities across the curriculum, developing their creativity, physical skills, reading, computing and personal development. They have approached every challenge with enthusiasm and should be very proud of all they have achieved this half term!
The Year 1 team would like to welcome our new Year 1 children to Cedar and Yew class. We are all very excited about the new school year and are looking forward to get to know the children over the next few weeks.
Autumn 1 term is always a lovely time of the year, where we are still enjoying the sunshine and getting to know the children in a relaxed way. Our timetable closely reflects how the children were learning in Year R and we feel that this supports their transition into Year 1 as best as possible. Our busy time allows the children to learn through their play, much like how they did in Year R and we work with children in small groups, enabling us to really get to know them and where they are in there learning journey.
This term the topic is Being Me in my World. We learn about our bodies and the senses in science and in history, personal timelines and living history. We learn about how to stay safe online using the SMART rules in computing. In R.E we are learning about the meaning of belonging and what it means to Christians.
Our focus stories in English are The Three Little Pigs, The Tiger Who Came to Tea and Sudden Hill. We also work hard on handwriting and introduce cursive. In maths we are recapping some of the learning from Year R to assess where the children are. Then we are full steam ahead with teen numbers, counting in 10's, money, counting forwards and backwards to 100 and one more and one less of any number to 100.
