Ada Lovelace Day STEM workshops
On Tuesday, six Year 6 girls attended a STEM workshop run by AWE. The pupils took part in so many interesting and varied workshops run by the AWE STEM ambassadors. The purpose of the workshops was to encourage girls into STEM subjects. It was inspiring to hear from females in STEM roles at AWE and learn about key figures from these industries from history and now.
We learnt about Mary Cartwirght, the pioneer of the chaos theory, and fractals (a complex, never-ending geometric pattern) and tried to create our own using blue tac and cocktail sticks. We were so impressed with the pupils' perseverance during this learning activity. We also learnt about female volcanologists, Katia Kraftt, and created our own volcano using the 'elephant toothpaste' experiment. In addition, we learnt about Lucy Jones ('the Beyonce of Earthquakes') and built our own seismograph. As you can see it was a jam packed, inspiring and exciting day that captured the pupils’ curiosity.
Thank you to the AWE team for organising such a fantastic day.
