Year R Bikeability!
Last week the new term started very excitedly as Early Years took part in Bikeability training , using the Balance bikes. They started by learning about how to make sure our clothing is safe when going on a bike and we then all did a helmet check to make sure that everyone knew the correct way to wear a bike helmet.
Next we moved onto making sure our bikes were safe. The children were taught how to check their tyres to make sure they had enough air in them, then how to ensure the brakes were working and finally how to make sure that the handlebars were tight enough.
Once all the checks had been completed, the children were shown how to walk safely with a bike and steer it around cones. We then moved onto riding our bikes. We started by using little steps to move from one place to another and then gradually made these bigger and bigger until we were pushing and gliding all the way across the playground.
Over the rest of the week the children continued to work on their gliding skills, as well as learning to navigate between and around cones. The children also had to control different speeds and played games to make them stop and start on command. Finally the children had a range of routes to use around the playground. These criss crossed each other, meaning that they would be travelling into each other's paths. This meant that the children had to stay focused and watch out for other moving bikes that might be travelling towards the same space as them.
The children all looked forward to their bikeability session each day and it was lovely to see the increase in confidence and resilience throughout the progression of the week.
