Pupil Parliament

Pupil Parliament

This year at GBP we have taken a fresh approach to pupil voice. In previous years, we have had elected representatives for a School Council. This year, we have introduced a Pupil Parliament and elected ministers, a Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.

Pupil Parliament will promote pupil leadership opportunities and enable children to develop valuable communication, organisation and debating skills through key roles, responsibilities and new experiences. This Pupil Parliament structure will provide opportunities for Year 3 to Year 6 to be actively involved in the way that Great Binfields Primary School is run. Pupil Parliament will benefit all pupils, staff and parents and the wider community because it will empower pupils to voice their opinions as well as influence the decisions that are made on their behalf.

Pupil Parliament will meet regularly to discuss topical and school-based issues. Mrs Franklin will support them to work with our pupils, staff, parents, governors and wider community to support the school ethos, to improve the achievements and successes of our school and to make the school a happier place for all.

Visit from Basingstoke MP Luke Murphy

On Friday 7th March we were lucky enough to have a visit from the Basingstoke MP, Luke Murphy. He began his visit by leading a whole school assembly and explained a little about his role as a Member of Parliament. Then the children had an opportunity to ask questions. After the assembly, Luke Murphy met with Pupil Parliament who spent some time discussing local issues they would like to be addressed. Some of these issues included: chewing gum bins for Basingstoke, tackling homelessness and more youth clubs. Luke said he could write a letter to the council of behalf of Pupil Parliament to highlight their concerns. Mrs Franklin was very impressed with how respectful and articulate the children were. Luke Murphy finished his visit with a tour round the school with Miss Lyddon.
