Pupil Parliament

Pupil Parliament

This year at GBP we have taken a fresh approach to pupil voice. In previous years, we have had elected representatives for a School Council. This year, we have introduced a Pupil Parliament and elected ministers, a Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.

Pupil Parliament will promote pupil leadership opportunities and enable children to develop valuable communication, organisation and debating skills through key roles, responsibilities and new experiences. This Pupil Parliament structure will provide opportunities for Year 3 to Year 6 to be actively involved in the way that Great Binfields Primary School is run. Pupil Parliament will benefit all pupils, staff and parents and the wider community because it will empower pupils to voice their opinions as well as influence the decisions that are made on their behalf.

Pupil Parliament will meet regularly to discuss topical and school-based issues. Mrs Franklin will support them to work with our pupils, staff, parents, governors and wider community to support the school ethos, to improve the achievements and successes of our school and to make the school a happier place for all.

Meetings in action

Visit from Basingstoke MP Luke Murphy

On Friday 7th March we were lucky enough to have a visit from the Basingstoke MP, Luke Murphy. He began his visit by leading a whole school assembly and explained a little about his role as a Member of Parliament. Then the children had an opportunity to ask questions. After the assembly, Luke Murphy met with Pupil Parliament who spent some time discussing local issues they would like to be addressed. Some of these issues included: chewing gum bins for Basingstoke, tackling homelessness and more youth clubs. Luke said he could write a letter to the council of behalf of Pupil Parliament to highlight their concerns. Mrs Franklin was very impressed with how respectful and articulate the children were. Luke Murphy finished his visit with a tour round the school with Miss Lyddon.

Pupil Parliament accomplishments

Pupil have completed a number of your suggestions to improve the school and make it super fun for you.

Main things:

Great Binfield’s bake off was a big accomplishment for PP and GBPS. Many of the pupils have been requesting this as it is a time to be creative and to have some fun. It will be put on seesaw as optional homework on the 12th of June and you will be given more details about it on seesaw when the homework is sent out.

GBPS big debate was an amazing idea to encourage discussion between classes. Every week there is a new one up in the hallways for everyone’s enjoyment. Each week it alternates between a would you rather question and a yes or no one. There is also an interactive addition so people can share their opinions and ideas.

Topic week/creative week (NHY) within creative week we usually consist of art, DT, English but with pupil parliaments help we have added a new subject, which is French. We are focus on a book call here we are. For the French part we are looking at the book in French, Nous sommes la. Each year group are focusing on one part of the book.

Meeting with Luke Murphy to speak about our local area and put forward some ideas to him. Some of these were more youth/ teen clubs, security to monitor graffiti, gum bins/cigarette bins on lampposts. Out of these only one was taken forward the Gum Bins. We got a letter saying he was considering it in parliament and will talk to his team!!!!!!

Meeting with Pabulum (school catering) is one thing that has been ticked of our list. Many of the pupils have had some small issues with the food. All of these issues have been discussed with them and are sure to be fix by now

Pupil parliament will be up to many other things throughout the rest of the school year to make GBPS a better school.
