Learning Together, Achieving Forever

Year 3 River Study

Today Year Three headed to the pub! Running alongside the Barton’s Mill pub is the River Loddon and, as it was such a beautiful day, they decided to take a dip! The water was initially freezing cold but once our bodies adjusted we were just fine. The children had two      sessions in the water where they were in for a few minutes at a time. The poor teachers were in the water for about three hours! There were three main activities for their Geography fieldwork trip:

1. Measuring velocity—looking at the speed of the river using oranges and an i-pad.

2. Measuring various cross-sections of the river. Person 1 remained close to the river bank; poor person 4 had to venture right across to the other side with Miss Lockley!

3. Mapwork—using compasses to plot human and physical features

Even though the main focus was Geography there was also parts of Science and Maths too. We enjoyed using metre sticks and measuring tapes - especially in the water! We were so lucky the sun shone so beautifully and particularly enjoyed our al fresco picnic. The children showed great resilience when in the water although the trickiest bit was arguably the     getting changed after!
