Year 2 trip to Milestones
Fri 28 Feb 2025Year 2 had a great day at Milestones museum today for our school trip. Our day started by experiencing 2 different workshops lead by the museum professionals. We learnt lots about the different transport that was used in the Victorian time up to now. It was interesting to see the differences between them. We were even able to get in some of them and pretend we had time travelled back hundreds of years. After lunch, we had time to explore the museum. It was great fun to see what Basingstoke used to be like. We even got to use our ration book to choose some old fashioned sweets!
Well done for a super day Year 2! -

Safer Internet Day
Tue 11 Feb 2025On Tuesday 11th February, Great Binfields celebrated its annual 'Safer Internet Day'. The theme this year was 'Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online'. Our Digital Leaders delivered an e-safety launch assembly to the whole school on Monday 10th February and then each year group participated in a range of e-safety activities during the school day. As you can imagine, the day prompted lots of thought-provoking questions and reaffirmed our school-wide e-safety SMART message. Please carry on the conversations at home and refer to the materials signposted to you in the letter for starting points around this. Also remember to sign up to https://smartphonefreechildhood.co.uk/ - you can get started by signing the Parent Pact.

Year 2 DT day
Fri 07 Feb 2025Today, Year 2 continued their DT and Science learning all about healthy foods and balanced diets. The children were tasked to design, make and evaluate a healthy wrap which included the 5 main food groups.
First, the children had the opportunity to taste test different foods. During this, they ticked off the ones they liked and wanted to include in their wrap. Next, the children designed their wrap. They also designed the wrapper that would hold it.
After lunch, the children were able to choose their ingredients and make their wrap. They had great fun doing this and even more fun eating them! Finally, the children evaluated their wraps and discussed what they would change to make it even better next time.
A super day in Year 2. A few even said 'this is the best day of my life!'

Year 3 First Aid Day
Fri 07 Feb 2025Year 3 were extremely fortunate to have Mrs Gilham, a nurse, come into school today as part of First Aid Day. The children were able to practise the recovery position, how to tie bandages and slings, and they could even have a try of CPR, including mouth to mouth and chest compressions!
Throughout the day, Year 3 explored how to make an emergency phone call, what you might need in a first aid kit, how to identify risks, what to do if you have a nose bleed and much more! What an engaging and exciting first aid day!A huge thank you to Mrs Gilham for giving up her time to come and teach the children new, and important, life skills.

Year 4 Treehouse Theatre
Fri 07 Feb 2025The children in Year 4 were very lucky this week as they had their Saxon and Viking Treehouse Theatre Day. Ben from Treehouse Theatre was as engaging as ever and gave all the key historical figures life. All children had an important role in the play – some of them talking about Saxon plans to fend off the Vikings, some of them defeating their enemies and some of them, unfortunately, suffering a terrible fate!
There was so much to learn from the play, much of it enhancing the two History topics we have already studied this year. We were blown away with the creative yet respectful behaviour demonstrated in Year 4 and we left in awe of Ben’s memory, knowledge and acting skills!

Science shows
Fri 07 Feb 2025We very recently had an exciting visit from the Royal Institution delivering a really impressive Science show. We had Ted leading the Energy LIVE! show which was an exciting audience led show, delving into the different stores of energy and how they affect our lives. Through lively, fire-based demonstrations, Ted took the intimidation out of the terminology around energy and showed us just how simple this subject can be.
Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 left their shows not only knowing their elastic from their gravitational, but also fired up (pun intended) about energy and with a newly-enthused approach to Science. An audience favourite was certainly Ted setting his hand on fire and launching a rocket across the hall. The children were VERY excited but ensured they showed the value of respect. Ted commented on how lovely our school was and how wonderful the children were.
The staff in Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5, along with our Science lead Miss Canfield, also received some training after school focussed on creating exciting, playful opportunities for our children to explore Science in school. Everyone left with some great ideas (although none with flame hands!).
This session was very kindly funded by The Farr Foundation which is a charity that supports organisations dedicated to inspiring school-aged children, raising their aspirations through STEM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) activities. We are very grateful for their support.

Mr Dot Comes to Great Binfields
Fri 07 Feb 2025This week, Mr Dot came into Great Binfields Primary School to help us with an art project. This is part of our celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the braille code.
Mr Dot is an artist with a vision impairment. He came in to school wearing bright yellow dungarees covered in braille code. Mr Dot spoke to the children about his dreams of becoming a world-famous artist and of a world that embraces braille.
Each child in school was given the task of creating a cube, decorated with their dreams. The children produced some fantastic artwork. Many of the children have dreams about becoming footballers, astronauts, bakers and teachers. Some other children spoke about being able to travel to the moon, or being able to buy a new car for their parents.
The artwork created was bright and colourful and the children had an amazing time talking to their classmates about their dreams and ambitions.
Once the art was completed, the children added the braille code for the word dreams to their cubes.

Year 3 walk around Chineham
Tue 04 Feb 2025The Year 3 children showed wonderful behaviour and respect when walking around Chineham as part of our Geography field trip. The children were tasked to look out for how the land is used around their local area. We found residential properties, retail (shops), woodlands, parks (which the children tested out), green fields and many other uses. Following the trip, the children drew maps of their route, and they will further their learning by comparing the land of Chineham many years ago, to more current times. We will be looking for similarities and differences too!
Well done Year 3, a fantastic walk around your local area which will really help to make our learning 'real life'.
