Sports Day 24
Wed 26 Jun 2024Great Binfields School recently had a fantastic sports day. The children showed so much enthusiasm and displayed the school's values brilliantly. The children demonstrated remarkable resilience and there was a strong sense of cooperation as they cheered each other on. Many students aspired to surpass their personal bests, showing true determination and growth.
The staff team is immensely proud of all the children for their efforts and sportsmanship. A special congratulations goes to the Yellow team, this year's winners. This was joyfully announced on Monday with yellow bubbles filling the courtyard. Well done to everyone involved, and especially to the Yellow team—congratulations, GBP!

Year 1 trip to Windsor Castle
Tue 25 Jun 2024Year 1 had a fantastic trip to Windsor Castle on Monday, as part of their topic: Kings, Queens and Castles. Windsor Castle was very busy with lots of tourists, however the children were great at listening to and following instructions so that we could see St George's Chapel, the grounds and the Castle itself.
During the visit we visited Queen Elizabeth II's resting place, looked at the motte and bailey style castle and viewed a variety of grand rooms with glistening gold decoration. Children were particularly interested in the paintings on the ceilings in some of the rooms as well as the shiny swords and armour! Some children asked lots of questions about the Great Fire of 1992 and how the rooms were restored.
Children did brilliantly with all the walking and despite being a hot day, many still had energy for their coach ride home!

Dad's Afternoon in Year R
Fri 14 Jun 2024To celebrate Father's Day, Rowan and Birch classes invited our dads (or other special people) to come and spend some time in school with us. In the week we had been busy making some special surprises for our dads. Then this afternoon we had some fun activities to do together such as tower building, blindfolded obstacle course, people decorating, a bug hunt, story sharing and a target game. Despite the odd bits of rain, we all had a lot of fun and really enjoyed having our special people in school.

Year 4 Visit Basing House
Thu 13 Jun 2024Yesterday, the year 4 children went on a trip to Basing House. When they were there, they explored the site and found out lots about the history of the house. This linked nicely to their Tudor topic last half term as Henry VIII visited and Queen Mary I and Phillip II of Spain had their honeymoon there!
They took part in a variety of activities such as: looking at artefacts, learning about Tudor medicine and even a treasure hunt using gps equipment.
“I loved the views at Basing House.” Louis.
“I really liked the food sorting activity.” Bella.
“I liked learning about Tudor medicine. Some of it was disgusting!” Ella.
Take a look at the photos to see what we got up to…

Year 6’s visit from the University of Portsmouth Institute of Cosmology
Wed 12 Jun 2024Today, Year 6 were lucky enough to have a visit from Nic and Jeremy from the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation from the University of Portsmouth. They were joined by Austin, Nic’s guide dog, who Year 6 were very happy to meet; they were very respectful of his important job. Nic and Jeremy added to our learning of the Solar System by teaching us about the scale of the planets, as well as the comparative distance. This was all done by tactile resources that would make the learning accessible to all.
The children were given different spherical objects to compare the sizes of the planets, such as: mustard seeds, peppercorns, marbles, ping pongs and tennis balls. We then used gems on a long strip of paper and our fractions knowledge to marvel at the distances between the planets. We were able to use our fingers to add to our learning and understanding. It was amazing to have experts on the subject, who we could direct our questions to. The children were so engaged in their learning, which was really brought to life by Nic and Jeremy, and asked lots insightful questions.

Year 6 visit Costello - Matilda
Mon 03 Jun 2024Year 6 kick started their half term with an incredible opportunity to watch a performance of Matilda at Costello Secondary School today. Having recently used Matilda as a writing stimulus in our English lessons, we simply could not turn down the chance to watch a live performance of the stage show at our feeder secondary school. More importantly, it was amazing to see some of our previous Great Binfields children flourishing on the stage – a special shout out to Ava T (Matilda), Pippa M (Mrs Phelps - librarian), Filipa L (Miss Honey) and Lillianna L (Matilda’s brother) for their performances. They were simply incredible and gave us goosebumps with their renditions of their respective roles.
The Year 6 children were thrilled that we were starting the term with a school trip but also in awe of the talents of the children in the show. It provided a moment of real ‘aspiration’, one of our school values, as to what they could achieve and be part of next year.
We enjoyed a picnic in the park after the show. What a fabulous day we’ve had Year 6. Once again, thank you for the invitation Costello😊
