A visit to the School Library Service
Wed 27 Nov 2024Yesterday, 8 children joined Mrs Osborne and Mrs Taylor to visit the School Library Service. When they were there, they had the very important job of choosing some new books for our class book corners. They also enjoyed talking to the staff at the library about their favourite books.
“I enjoyed looking at all the books; my favourite was ‘The Chocolate Dog’. I also chose a book about cars which I know my friend Alby will love reading.” - Summer.
“I loved looking at all the books. It was fascinating. My favourite book is called ‘The Song From Somewhere Else’ because it really caught my eye. I have started reading it already.” - Arliyah-Rose.

Year 4 - Aviation adventure, careers in the sky
Wed 20 Nov 2024Today, Year 4 were lucky enough to attend a virtual webinar run by Education and Employers, talking all about careers linked to aviation. The children could name a few jobs they knew would be linked but we heard about many others that we had no idea even existed until they were shared. There were three guest speakers, one a pilot for Easyjet, one a radio engineer and the other a control room operator. We learnt all about their roles, including the best bits and the challenging parts as well as hear about how they ended up in that career. It was incredibly interesting and even the adults felt inspired by the career paths chosen. The speakers told us how they used many of our values in order to be successful, including resilience and cooperation as well as key skills linked to effective communication and patience.
The top tips from the three speakers included:
Will the pilot- Always persevere and show passion. If you are passionate about aviation, you could find yourself in the flight deck.
Kim the control room operator- When you find yourself doing lots of things at the same time, remain calm and try to continue multi-tasking.
Stuart the radio engineer - Ask lots of questions- don't be afraid to ask what you might think is a silly question. Go ahead and ask.

Equality and Rights Advocates (EARA) meeting
Fri 15 Nov 2024Yesterday, Mrs Franklin took our brand new Equality and Rights Advocates to their first EARA group meeting. Hampshire Equality and Rights Advocates (EARA) are a group of students from Hampshire schools who work collaboratively to promote equality and children's rights in their schools based on the nine protected characteristics of the Equality Act and UNCRC.
Yesterday's session was an opportunity for our advocates to learn a little more about what their roles will entail and how they can promote equality and improve the understanding of a child’s right to the other children and adults at Great Binfields. This term, their specific focus is gender equality.
Mrs Franklin was really impressed by the ideas our group shared and how well they all displayed GBP values.
They were also lucky enough to be the first group of children to take a ride in the new school minibus! Thank you Mr Ellis!

Avon Tyrrell - Day 3
Thu 14 Nov 2024After another hearty breakfast (a Full English), the children embarked upon a morning of activities and adventure. We have, once again, witnessed some incredibly brave and courageous children who have achieved great success and surprised themselves with their achievements. The Zip Wire has been a particular highlight of the morning as the children zoomed across the water. With those on the High Ropes facing a huge challenge of climbing to the great heights and then leaping off a wobbly platform to grab and suspended bar! Many children have conquered their fear of heights and are now grinning from ear to ear with pride.
Another highlight of the day has been the challenge course. The children have not only enjoyed testing themselves as individuals and working as a team on lots of challenges, such as balancing a giant seesaw and escaping without touching the wires of ‘The Cube’ as a team, but have loved chucking themselves into the mud under the cargo net, when racing through the course.
The adults have received such lovely feedback from the Avon Tyrrell staff today regarding the children. We are so proud of them. We are looking forward to enjoying a relaxing evening after dinner, with a movie night in our pjs - ahead of our final day of activities tomorrow.
Here are some quotes from the children themselves:
“The zip wire was so fast; I zoomed across the lake. I was worried my shoes were going to slip off but in the end I was doing funny poses in the air for my friends who were watching.” Hridan
“My team did so well when we were making a shelter. I helped carry big logs and collected lots of leaves so we didn’t wet when they put water on the shelter!” Alby
“I felt scared during the High Ropes because it was so high up but in the end I did the ‘leap of faith’ and I felt really proud of myself.” Isla EM
“I really liked the mountain biking as we went on the red route which was very tricky as there were lots of tree routes!” Oliver M
I’m so proud that I did the leap of faith during the High Ropes as I’m a bit scared of heights!” Dylan. -
Avon Tyrrell - Day 2
Wed 13 Nov 2024The children settled really well last night and slept brilliantly after enjoying an exciting night walk yesterday evening. They have all been incredibly respectful of one another and very understanding of how important sleep is to ensure that everyone is feeling their very best.
To launch day two, the children energised themselves with delicious pancakes, berries, maple syrup or chocolate sauce! We then enjoyed a jam-packed day full of activities, including: abseiling, mountain biking, zip wire and bush craft. All of the adults have been blown away by the sheer grit, determination and courage that the children have displayed throughout the day. Some children even confronted their fears and despite feeling nervous, truly gave their all to each activity. We have honestly been so impressed with all of the children and can see the Great Binfields values shining through in their attitudes and behaviours, despite it being quite cold. Cooperation, resilience, creativity in their problem solving and aspiration to succeed have been in abundance over the past few days. It has been so wonderful to see the children working together so beautifully. The respect and kindness the children have shown each other reflect the same values being taught at school during our Anti-bullying week. We will continue to ensure these messages are being encouraged throughout the week.
This evening, we have enjoyed pie and mash before we are going to set off for a camp fire as a whole year group. Whilst it’s been a beautifully sunny day, now the sun has set we definitely need to wrap up for the cold. The children will enjoy campfire songs and games, plus toasting marshmallows. I’m sure they will be straight to sleep tonight after another busy day.
Here are some reviews of the day:
“I really enjoyed the Mountain Biking. I loved being able to go really fast down the bumpy hills. Oscar H.
“In Bushcraft, we had to work really hard as a team to collect our firewood and use the flint and steel to light our fire - that was tricky! I was proud I didn’t give up.” Huxley.
“I enjoyed the abseiling although the archery has been my favourite so far!” Nazaaha.
Take a look at the photos to see what we’ve been up to in full on our second day.

Avon Tyrrell - Day 1
Tue 12 Nov 2024We had the most beautiful journey to Avon Tyrrell, through the New Forest. Spotting the ponies along the way. The glorious sunshine was highlighting the beauty of this area of the country and made us very excited for our final destination. First on the agenda was to tell the very excitable children who they would be sharing a room with. After plenty of celebrations and jubilations, the cheering soon came to a pause as the children were required to make their own beds. With a little cooperation and lots of adult help, everyone was able to settle into a cosy bed tonight.
Our afternoon started with a delicious lunch (steak or vegetable pastries with diced potatoes and vegetables) which was swiftly followed by an afternoon jam packed with activities, including: pioneering, mountain biking, the challenge course and abseiling. During the pioneering session, the children built their very own catapults. They had to use some intricate knot styles to secure a selection of poles in place to create giant sized catapults! The children were then able to score points based on the accuracy of their aims.
It was also great to see lots of children getting out of their comfort zone as they cycled through the forest and took on lots of hilly and bumpy terrain - ending on a steep, continuous incline. The perseverance was incredible. Mrs James was so proud of the children who had been feeling slightly 'rusty' with Mountain Biking but pushed themselves further than they thought they could.
After a filling roast chicken dinner or stuffed pepper, we all enjoyed a leisurely night walk where they learnt about the history of Avon Tyrrell and made fresh pine needle tea. We tried hard to keep our torches off to adjust our eye-sight to the darkness. It was remarkable how much you could see. The children have made the absolute most of their first day!
This evening, the children have settled beautifully and are already making all of the adults incredibly proud. Here are a few quotes from the children themselves about their day so far:
“I wasn't sure about Pioneering before I started but it was so much fun! I really enjoyed learning how to make a catapult and competing against others with targets.” Annabelle
“The rooms are so spacious and we worked as a team to make our beds - the duvet covers were a bit of a challenge.” Poppy C
“The lunch was really good - I had loads of chips! Aaryan
At first I was nervous about Mountain Biking but we had a little practise and after that I was perfectly fine. We went down loads of steep hills and turns and at the end there was a huge hill - I nearly made it all the way to the top." Hriday
Keep checking in throughout the week to see what your wonderful children are getting up to. Take a look at a selection of photographs from today, more will be uploaded over the next few days.

Year 3 Iron Age Day
Wed 06 Nov 2024Year 3 had a fabulous day learning all about the Iron Age on Wednesday. The day started with Iron Age Matt giving a presentation on the journey from Stone Age to Bronze Age to Iron Age. He brought along lots of artefacts for the children to investigate and we began by labelling how an Iron Age warrior would dress. Some children were able to hold replica shields, spears and swords to imagine what it would have like to have been a person living in this time period and how the Iron Age communities were setup with everyone having a role that could be recognised with their dress.
After break, the hall was split into four areas, which all the children rotated around. One area was furs and skins exploring how they would have been used within Iron Age Houses and clothing. Some armour was arranged out for the children to dress up and feel to understand the weight of the armour that would have been worn in that period. Children also got to explore how flour was grinded using a quern stone, and explore antlers and leather from different animals.
After lunch warrior training began! The children all got to experience 'sword' and 'spear' training. When they were not doing the training, there were lots of puzzles or spear tip decorations to create. In the classroom, shield making was taking place with each child decorating their own shield in the Iron Age style out of cardboard and tissue paper.
It was a wonderful day and a great way to capture the children's interest in our new topic this term.
