School Council Election Day
Thu 10 Sep 2015This week has been Democracy week at Great Binfields Primary School.
Our class School Councillors have been elected and they will of course attend the weekly meetings. We were very impressed by some of their speeches. We could see that most of the children who stood for the position had prepared carefully. The successful candidates will receive some training before taking up their posts by previous school councillors.
Today is our school elections for Chair and Vice Chair of our School Council. The children are in years 5 and 6. They have prepared their election campaigns so well which included creating banners and posters to go around school. Today they each spoke to the whole school in assembly. They spoke so confidently and answered the questions posed very well. They also showed great resilience as we had a technical hitch and this did not phase them at all!
Thank you to everyone who stood for our elections. It shows that you really care and want to help make our school an even better one. We would also like to thank one of our governors, our Vice Chair, Mr Mike Nicholls who helps us run the elections. He also talked to the children late last week about what qualities a good school councillors has and will develop throughout the year.
We look forward to finding out the results!

Feeling Green? Something for Everyone!
Sun 06 Sep 2015Great Binfields have recently registered to become an eco-school. This means we will be working hard over the coming months and years to gain eco-status!
Eco-schools is 'an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life.'
Keep your eyes on the website for upcoming activities we will be involved in, in order to gain our green status. If you would like to find out more about the programme visit www.eco-schools.org.uk
In the meantime, why not get involved with friends and family during Basingstoke's Green Week, running from 19th-27th September. Have a look at the leaflet to see which activities you and your family might want to get involved in! Let us know what you think! Find the leaflet here.

WOW - Walk to School Initiative
Fri 04 Sep 2015We are excited to tell you about a new walk to school project that our school will be running this year with national charity Living Streets and Basingstoke Borough Council.
Who is involved?
Selected schools in Basingstoke have been invited to participate in the project which encourages pupils and their families to walk to school at least once a week through an initiative called WoW.
What is WoW?
WoW is a scheme run by Living Streets, the charity behind the national Walk to School campaign, which encourages families to walk to school at least once a week. At the end of each month, children who walked at least once every week will receive a special collectable pin badge. There is a different badge to collect for each month of the school year, for 2015/16 the theme of the badges is Our Healthy Planet.
Please go to the Children's section of our website and click on 'Travelling to School Safely'. In there is a PDF leaflet that you can download which contains more information about the scheme.

Congratulations Cooper!
Fri 04 Sep 2015We had one very proud chap yesterday afternoon and quite rightly so. Cooper entered a whole school competition to design a banner to go outside our school. We have a problem where some people park on the double yellow zig-zaglines and this of course is a danger to the children walking into our school. The brief of the competition was to design a banner which reminds people to park safely and Cooper won! Well done young man!
It really is an effective sign and it is situated on the fence beside the main gates. I hope that our school community take note of what it is saying!

Welcome Back!
Thu 03 Sep 2015Welcome back everyone,
We have been back since Tuesday and boy, this week has flown by. The children have settled back into school routines really well. During my first assembly of the year, I talked to the children about how important it was to make a good first impression and we also reminded ourselves of the values we would like to see this year. I am pleased to say that the children remembered many of them throughout the week. Long may this continue!
Our first newsletter of the year we will be finding its way into your inbox soon and I promise to get Our Annual Dates Letter out to you soon as well.
Please do not forget our expectations meetings next week. Our KS1 meeting is on Tuesday 8th September and our KS2 meeting is on the Wednesday 9th.
We strongly urge you to attend as we are outlining what you should expect in the way of whole school development; what to expect from us as a school with regards to your child's curriculum this year; what we expect from the children so that they develop really good learning behaviours and what we expect with regards to our parental partnership with you.

What you can do for the remainder of the holidays
Wed 19 Aug 2015With only 12 days left of the Summer Holidays, you might be wandering what else can I do with the children to keep them occupied without a huge expense as I certainly am. I have searched the internet and scoured the local Tourist Info Point in Basingstoke and have a few suggestions for you:
- The Willis Museum is great for history lovers but it also currently has The Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition there. I'm definitely going to take my family there before it closes on the 31st October.
- We have a large number of super parks and woodlands in and around Basingstoke that are worth a visit - many of which have lots to keep the children busy and happy as well as being perfect for a picnic. Check out this website for more information on where to find them. http://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/parks We also know that there are also extra events planned for the school holidays.
- Basingstoke also has a good network of cycle paths. Check out this page for more details: http://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/content/page/32630/Cycle%20Routes.pdf which is on the Basingstoke Council website.
- Lots of sporting facilities in and around Basingstoke such as golf and tennis centres have good offers on taster sessions, some even being free.
- If you are a member of Woodland Trust or the National Trust - there are loads of events happening across the county and further afield. Why not work through '50 things to do before you are 11 3/4'?? I bet you could tick off a fair few before we go back to school.
- If the weather, is really bad one day - why not have a go at painting pottery at a local ceramics café. it doesn't have to be an expensive exercise.
- And don't forget the library too. There is obviously our local library at Chineham and the Basingstoke Discovery Centre is very good with lots of events happening this summer. Don't forget our reading challenge at school as well as the one the library is running too.
