  • Holi Festival Celebration

    Mon 10 Mar 2025

Today we held a Holi Celebration Day to mark the Hindu festival, which is taking place on Friday 14th March. The children were invited to come in wearing bright colours to celebrate the festival of colour, love and spring. Some of our Year 6 children who celebrate the festival led a whole school assembly about how and why it is celebrated. Each class then took part in an activity linked to the event.

  • Visit from local MP

    Mon 10 Mar 2025

On Friday we were lucky enough to have a visit from the Basingstoke MP, Luke Murphy. He began his visit by leading a whole school assembly and explained a little about his role as a Member of Parliament. Then the children had an opportunity to ask questions. After the assembly, Luke Murphy met with Pupil Parliament who spent some time discussing local issues they would like to be addressed. Some of these issues included: chewing gum bins for Basingstoke, tackling homelessness and more youth clubs. Luke said he could write a letter to the council of behalf of Pupil Parliament to highlight their concerns. Mrs Franklin was very impressed with how respectful and articulate the children were. Luke Murphy finished his visit with a tour round the school with Miss Lyddon.

  • World Book Day

Thu 06 Mar 2025 Mrs Osborne

We have had a fantastic World Book Day today. From Harry Potter, to Gangsta Granny, to Alice in Wonderland, everyone looked brilliant in their costumes.

The focus of the day was ‘encouraging a love of reading for pleasure’, and all classes read a lovely book called ‘The Bridges’ by Tom Percival. We also read a poem called ‘You are a Reader’. The children took part in a variety of reading and writing activities linked to these texts. Some children even took part in a live online writing lesson with 30,000 children!

  • Equality and Rights Advocates (EARA) spring meeting

    Tue 04 Mar 2025

Today, Mrs Franklin and Mrs Holdsworth took our Equality and Rights Advocates to the spring EARA group meeting. Hampshire Equality and Rights Advocates (EARA) are a group of students from Hampshire schools who work collaboratively to promote equality and children's rights in their schools based on the nine protected characteristics of the Equality Act and UNCRC.

In today's session, the children were considering the question 'Are all stones the same?' They were then all invited to take a stone and describe them. Noticing how each stone was completely unique, the children were then able to draw parallels with the diversity across society. After that, we focussed on the word 'kindness' as it has been voted Children's Word of the Year. Our EARA group thought about how they could show kindness to others.

Mrs Franklin and Mrs Holdsworth were really impressed by how well the children participated and that they displayed the school values of Respect, Creativity and Cooperation.

  • Nami Ralph Visits Year 6

Mon 03 Mar 2025 Mrs Osborne

Today, year 6 had a special visit from an artist called Nami Ralph, where they created ‘Zines’ (handmade books which  represent stories being told by people in the way that they want to tell them). The children enjoyed seeing some of Nami’s own artwork, which certainly inspired them to create their own.

Nami has recently been part of the ‘Basingstoke’s My Home’ exhibition which is running until 16th March at The Willis Museum in town.

  • Year 2 trip to Milestones

    Fri 28 Feb 2025

Year 2 had a great day at Milestones museum today for our school trip. Our day started by experiencing 2 different workshops lead by the museum professionals. We learnt lots about the different transport that was used in the Victorian time up to now. It was interesting to see the differences between them. We were even able to get in some of them and pretend we had time travelled back hundreds of years. After lunch, we had time to explore the museum. It was great fun to see what Basingstoke used to be like. We even got to use our ration book to choose some old fashioned sweets!
Well done for a super day Year 2!

  • Cross Country

    Wed 12 Feb 2025

A big well done to our cross country runners yesterday!

  • Safer Internet Day

    Tue 11 Feb 2025 Mrs H

On Tuesday 11th February, Great Binfields celebrated its annual 'Safer Internet Day'. The theme this year was 'Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online'. Our Digital Leaders delivered an e-safety launch assembly to the whole school on Monday 10th February and then each year group participated in a range of e-safety activities during the school day. As you can imagine, the day prompted lots of thought-provoking questions and reaffirmed our school-wide e-safety SMART message. Please carry on the conversations at home and refer to the materials signposted to you in the letter for starting points around this. Also remember to sign up to https://smartphonefreechildhood.co.uk/ - you can get started by signing the Parent Pact.

  • Year 2 DT day

    Fri 07 Feb 2025

Today, Year 2 continued their DT and Science learning all about healthy foods and balanced diets. The children were tasked to design, make and evaluate a healthy wrap which included the 5 main food groups.

First, the children had the opportunity to taste test different foods. During this, they ticked off the ones they liked and wanted to include in their wrap. Next, the children designed their wrap. They also designed the wrapper that would hold it.

After lunch, the children were able to choose their ingredients and make their wrap. They had great fun doing this and even more fun eating them! Finally, the children evaluated their wraps and discussed what they would change to make it even better next time.

A super day in Year 2. A few even said 'this is the best day of my life!'
