  • Year 3 First Aid Day

Fri 07 Feb 2025 Miss Thomas

Year 3 were extremely fortunate to have Mrs Gilham, a nurse, come into school today as part of First Aid Day. The children were able to practise the recovery position, how to tie bandages and slings, and they could even have a try of CPR, including mouth to mouth and chest compressions!

Throughout the day, Year 3 explored how to make an emergency phone call, what you might need in a first aid kit, how to identify risks, what to do if you have a nose bleed and much more! What an engaging and exciting first aid day!

A huge thank you to Mrs Gilham for giving up her time to come and teach the children new, and important, life skills.

  • Year 4 Treehouse Theatre

    Fri 07 Feb 2025

The children in Year 4 were very lucky this week as they had their Saxon and Viking Treehouse Theatre Day. Ben from Treehouse Theatre was as engaging as ever and gave all the key historical figures life. All children had an important role in the play – some of them talking about Saxon plans to fend off the Vikings, some of them defeating their enemies and some of them, unfortunately, suffering a terrible fate!

There was so much to learn from the play, much of it enhancing the two History topics we have already studied this year. We were blown away with the creative yet respectful behaviour demonstrated in Year 4 and we left in awe of Ben’s memory, knowledge and acting skills!

  • Science shows

    Fri 07 Feb 2025

We very recently had an exciting visit from the Royal Institution delivering a really impressive Science show. We had Ted leading the Energy LIVE! show which was an exciting audience led show, delving into the different stores of energy and how they affect our lives. Through lively, fire-based demonstrations, Ted took  the intimidation out of the terminology around energy and showed us just how simple this subject can be.

Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 left their shows not only knowing their elastic from their gravitational, but also fired up (pun intended) about energy and with a newly-enthused approach to Science. An audience favourite was certainly Ted setting his hand on fire and launching a rocket across the hall. The children were VERY excited but ensured they showed the value of respect. Ted commented on how lovely our school was and how wonderful the children were.

The staff in Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5, along with our Science lead Miss Canfield, also received some training after school focussed on creating exciting, playful opportunities for our children to explore Science in school. Everyone left with some great ideas (although none with flame hands!).

This session was very kindly funded by The Farr Foundation which is a charity that supports organisations dedicated to inspiring school-aged children, raising their aspirations through STEM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) activities. We are very grateful for their support.

  • Mr Dot Comes to Great Binfields

    Fri 07 Feb 2025 R.Fox

This week, Mr Dot came into Great Binfields Primary School to help us with an art project. This is part of our celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the braille code.

Mr Dot is an artist with a vision impairment. He came in to school wearing bright yellow dungarees covered in braille code. Mr Dot spoke to the children about his dreams of becoming a world-famous artist and of a world that embraces braille.

Each child in school was given the task of creating a cube, decorated with their dreams. The children produced some fantastic artwork. Many of the children have dreams about becoming footballers, astronauts, bakers and teachers. Some other children spoke about being able to travel to the moon, or being able to buy a new car for their parents.

The artwork created was bright and colourful and the children had an amazing time talking to their classmates about their dreams and ambitions.

Once the art was completed, the children added the braille code for the word dreams to their cubes.

  • Year 3 walk around Chineham

Tue 04 Feb 2025 Miss Thomas

The Year 3 children showed wonderful behaviour and respect when walking around Chineham as part of our Geography field trip. The children were tasked to look out for how the land is used around their local area. We found residential properties, retail (shops), woodlands, parks (which the children tested out), green fields and many other uses. Following the trip, the children drew maps of their route, and they will further their learning by comparing the land of Chineham many years ago, to more current times. We will be looking for similarities and differences too!

Well done Year 3, a fantastic walk around your local area which will really help to make our learning 'real life'.

  • Year 6 at Hampton Court Palace

    Wed 29 Jan 2025

The Year 6 children thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Hampton Court Palace today and will hopefully be coming home with lots of new facts that they learnt throughout the day. The children were shocked by the sheer size and grandeur of the palace but equally loved exploring the meaning behind some of the more intricate details too.

The children were incredibly well behaved throughout the trip and enjoyed retracing Henry VIII’s steps through the never-ending corridors. Particular highlights included Henry VIII’s kitchens, where we stood by the huge fires and asked lots of insightful questions. We also got to sit and ask questions in the Royal Chapel, where the heart of one of Henry’s wives heart is said to be buried. I wonder if the children can remember which one it was and can tell you more? The children were also infatuated with learning about previous ghost sightings and tales of two of Henry’s wives.

Alongside exploring the palace, itself, the children took part in an intriguing workshop called ‘Investigating Henry’. This session, which was led by the staff at Hampton Court, encouraged the children to think critically and evaluate a variety of primary and secondary sources to help them understand more about the type of man Henry was. Using replica artefacts and excerpts from contemporary Tudor sources, the children were curious to weigh up the evidence and construct a balanced opinion of Henry VIII by asking key enquiry questions. It was fascinating to find out that there was more to Henry VIII than the popular stereotypes!

We are sure that the children will be eager to share the facts they have learnt and describe the array of artefacts witnessed throughout the trip as the children demonstrated such excitement and a genuine love of learning, immersing themselves in Tudor life within the walls of Hampton Court Palace. Take a look at some of the photos from today to find out more…

  • Year 6 Bikeability

Tue 28 Jan 2025 Mrs Osborne

Year 6 had a wheelie good time taking part in their Bikeability sessions! During the 3 days, they learnt about how to ride safely on the road using suitable signals and manoeuvres. At the end of the course, all of the children received a badge and a certificate. Well done Year 6!

  • Year 2 Titanic Topic Launch

    Mon 13 Jan 2025

Today, Year 2 embarked onto the Titanic ship to excite their learning for their new topic.

Our school hall was transformed into the Titanic which was organised into the 3 different classes. The children picked out their ticket from a pot and then entered the ship. Depending on their ticket 'class', the children were given a different biscuit. 1st class ate a Jammy Dodger, 2nd class ate a Custard Cream and 3rd class ate a Rich Tea biscuit. This really helped the children see the differences between the class system. The 1st class had more space, tables, chairs and posh table wear.

After, Year 2 had fun exploring all of the classes and the different activities we had on offer. The children were so engaged and inquisitive which meant they really got a lot from our topic launch. We look forward to learning lots more about the Titanic this half term.

  • Darrell Wakelam - Artist Zoom with Year 5 and Year 6

    Fri 13 Dec 2024

On Wednesday, Year 5 and 6 had an exciting opportunity to attend an artist Zoom with 3D artist Darrell Wakelam. We were able to speak with Darrell about his inspiring sculptures, which are made from everyday recycled materials such as cardboard tubes, paper plates, milk bottles and cardboard boxes. He then took the time to show us some of his completed pieces of artwork - we were in awe of his intricate dinosaur that was made entirely of cardboard. Have a look at his website to see some of these pieces of work www.darrellwakelam.com.

We then followed along with Darrell as he made a 3D snowman using just cardboard and masking tape. We used recycled cereal boxes for our own ones. We then learnt tips on how to use tissue paper and PVA glue to paint a background - this took a lot of patience.

We were so impressed with the children's attitude to tackling a new form of creating 3D art. Have a look at the pictures to see our Winter creations.
