• Hockey League Success

  I want to congratulate our GBP Hockey A and B Teams for another good result. For the last two years, both teams have been in the top 5 of the Basingstoke and Deane Schools that participate. I am pleased to announce that for 2016 GBP Team B came third and GBP Team A came 4th in the legue competition. A huge well done to you all.

  Thank you to all of the children who have taken part - your sportsmanship, grit and determination to do well is admirable. Our squads really enjoy the experience and they really appreciate the commitment of their coaches Miss Brookes and Miss Grainger.

  I also want to thank the parents who regularly help with transport and support the team whilst they are playing.

  

• Science Links for the holidays

  Miss Rogers received a leaflet about Newlyns Farm Shop opening their doors to the public for a lambing weekend on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th April. We thought this would be great to share with Great Binfields because of its super links to Science. During your visit you can find out about lambs being born and you never know, you might even see it happen!

• Year 3/4 Ukulele Concert

  On Thursday, Pine and Hazel Class thoroughly impressed their parents and teachers with their effort and enthusiasm to perform in the ukulele concert. They have been working really hard this term to learn the parts of the instrument, various songs in both major and minor keys and the music theory behind this. Well done year 3/4!

   

   

  

• Year 2 Tea Party

  Year 2 had a fantastic morning enjoying a Mad Hatter's Tea Party with their family members. The children have been working hard all week creating board games, designing decorations and baking lots of delicious cakes so that they could invite their grandparents in to celebrate their hard work. As part of their homework the children created their own 'Mad' hats; they really had put a great effort into their designs and they looked fantastic! It was lovely to see such a great turn out of grandparents, aunts, uncles or parents attending and being able to share the morning with their child. • Year One Science Homework!

  The children in Year One have had an exciting Science homework project this week. They have been collecting a range of materials to help them create their very own toys. The children made a fantastic effort and showed real creativity in all of their ideas. Today, Oak and Chestnut got a chance to view, play and ask questions about each other's work. It was great to see the children so enthusiastic.

   

   

  

• Year 5 and 6 Basingstoke Trip

  Year 5 and 6 had a brilliant day out in Basingstoke as part of their 'Amazingstoke' topic.

  During the day, they visited local landmarks such as: The Willis Museum, St Michaels Church, The Holy Ghost Ruins and The War Memorial Park. As well as this, they saw where Thomas Burberry (founder of Burberry Fashions) was buried.

  The day was finished off nicely with a lovely picnic and a play in Eastrop Park! All of the children were beautifully behaved and a member of the public complimented them on their good manners - we are very proud of them all!

• A bit of a buzz in Year 2

  On Monday afternoon, some members of Basingstoke Bee Keepers Association were making a bit of buzz in Year 2! They kindly gave up their time to come and talk to about bees! This was Year 2's link to 'Science in the Real World' and linked very well to their current topic of Traditional Tales and lifecycles. Year 2 have been learning about the lifecycle of their bean plants so it was very helpful for them to understand the important role bees play for food.

   

  Year 2 had a hands on experience, getting to investigate a bee hive and feeling the honey comb. They also learnt about the differences between bees and wasps and the variety of different bees there are. It was great to see how enthusiastic the children were and how much knowledge of bees some of them already had! They also learnt a very important lesson; bees are our friend and without them the world would be a very different place! 

   

  Later in the week both Beech and Ash class will get to try some of the delicious honey made from the very bee hives they were looking at! In the meantime, be sure to ask the children some facts from the afternoon!

  

• Science Week Competition

  I hope you are all enjoying Science week so far and excited about what is to come!

  We have a Science Poster Competition - it is based on ‘space’ however this means any type of space where science takes place.

  Year 2 are doing this as part of their Science Week in school but they may bring theirs home to finish, if they do not manage this in class.  Children in different year groups who are doing this for homework will bring some paper home with instructions so your child/ren will have a clear idea of what is expected.

  We need to submit our responses by the first day back after our Easter break - the 12th of April...so as long as they have been completed and returned by then, that’s not a problem. Posters can be created in 2D or 3D form and by individuals or in teams. They must be named with an explanation of what they are about.
  
  There are also lots of other ideas on the Science Week website for other science activities too which you could have a go at home.

• New Build Drawing Competition

  Dear Parents and Carers of children in KS2

  I have attached an artist's impression of our school when the new classrooms have been added.  The contractor, Balfour Beatty, would like to run a competition for KS2 classes where the children can draw an image on A4 paper of what they think their school will look like when it is finished.  The winning entry will be reproduced on the Balfour Beatty site information board at the entrance to the school.

  Entries need to be in school by Tuesday 22nd March.
