Year 5 and 6 Drama at Costello
Wed 09 Mar 2016This afternoon, the Year 5 and 6 children visited Costello for an afternoon of fun and drama! The afternoon kicked off with a fantastic performance linked to friendships and the transition from primary school to secondary school. Following this, with the help of the Costello students, the children created and performed their own drama sketches. A brilliant afternoon was had by all! -
KS1 Football Festival
Tue 08 Mar 2016On Wednesday it was Y2's turn to show off their skills in the KS1 football festival at the power league pitches in Brighton Hill. 10 children braved the cold and had a brilliant afternoon. They even wanted to carry on through the hail they were having so much fun! Thankyou to all the parents, siblings and grandparents who came along to support the children and although 'bees to honeypot' may have crossed your mind, the children had a great run around and a chance to experience some competitive play. A special mention goes to Faith for her outstanding play at goal keeper, saving numerous goals and keeping focuses and determined. Also a big well done to Olli for being picked out by the coaches for his enthusiasm and positivity throughout the afternoon to receive a prize. -
Netball
Tue 08 Mar 2016On Tuesday 1st March Miss Grainger took a group of year 5/6 children to the netball qualifying competition at Russell Howard. With not as many schools entering this year, everyone automatically qualified for the finals allowing the children to have some friendly matches today, and a little practice before the final event. Great Binfields started slow and took a while to get into the swing of things but eventually started sinking the goals. With some great shots from Mohan and Jasper we then became a bit more confident. Megan was tenacious in defence, grabbing interceptions left, right and centre. Unfortunately we didn't get many wins, but a few draws and a couple of defeats. More children will get the opportunity to play on the 17th. We're looking forward to it.

Tue 08 Mar 2016Y2 are currently having Basingstoke rugby club in on Wednesday mornings for their PE sessions. So far we've learnt how to tag each other, dodge and even score a try! Coach Cooper makes the sessions really fun and everyone is really enjoying it. Miss Grainger is keeping a close eye on keen players to join the tag rugby team next year.

Early Years are hopping mad!
Mon 07 Mar 2016The children in Early Years were very excited to discover that the school pond had become home to lots of frogspawn. The children have made several visits out there to study what has been happening and everyone has been keen to learn all about frogs. Today we collected some frogspawn and they are now living in our science area in Maple Class, so we can take a closer look at them, as they grow. We have researched how to look after them and all about their life cycle. We will be checking daily to see what is happening in our tank and will be keeping a frog diary!! -
Year 3/4 visit The Anvil for a 'Giant Sing'
Fri 04 Mar 2016Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of escorting year 3/4 to The Anvil Theatre in Basingstoke to take part in the production of ‘The Selfish Giant’. We had been practising the songs from the show for several weeks and the children had really enjoyed learning them. Some of the children had noted that there seemed to be a theme running through the songs and we were all becoming quite intrigued to see what the performance would involve!
On the day we arrived at the theatre, along with around ten other schools from all over Hampshire. We were soon warming up our voices with a very jovial lady, who explained that along with our voices there would be a choir from one of the local senior schools and some children actually performing during the performance. It soon became apparent the songs were part of a story based on a short story by Oscar Wild of the same name, all about a giant who returns from a long holiday and finds children playing in his garden. He is so cross he builds a tall wall around his beautiful garden and as a result Spring never returns. That is until he meets a little boy in his garden that needs his help and then he realises how lonely he has become. So he invites the local children back into his garden to play and eventually Summer returns.
The children behaved amazingly well throughout and really enjoyed singing the songs that we had learnt. We all became riveted to the performance and watched in awe as the children who acted and danced and depicted the children visiting the garden and the beautiful fruit trees.
All in all, we all thoroughly enjoyed the performance and I was very proud that our children sang so beautifully, I was especially impressed with Kaiden and Harrison from my class who were pitch perfect! We also had the pleasure of seeing the lady who had composed the production who was there with us watching the show. All in all a wonderful afternoon and experience!

Artist in Year 1
Thu 03 Mar 2016Yesterday Chestnut Class had a visit from a Spanish Artist (who now lives locally) called Fátima Pantoja Fernandez and today she came back in to work with Oak class.
She did a talk about her background and how she became interested in Art, followed by talking about another Spanish Artist - Picasso. The children then got the chance to take part in a Picasso inspired workshop where they created 3D portraits; made out of recycled materials Year 1 collected.
She then showed the children how she creates her own portraits - in under 10 minutes. She used different children as model's for this!
It was great to see how enthusiastic the children were and to see them taking risks with their creativity.
The children's work is displayed in their classroom and on the window - feel free to pop in and come and have a look!

Mothering Sunday Sales Event
Wed 02 Mar 2016Today was our mothering Sunday Sales Event and our children had lots to choose from in the end thanks to some very generous families who bought in extra items. The photos of the hall before the sale shows how much we had and the quality of gifts was magnificent - a huge thank you. The children very much enjoyed browsing and were really thinking about what their mum or nan would like. They have all been beautifully wrapped thanks to our small group of volunteers who came in to assist.
So many families have said what a lovely idea this is and that it is great that we are teaching our children that it is important to say a little thank you to our loved ones. If your child has forgotten to bring in their £1 today, we will have one more opportunity for children to purchase tomorrow morning and although we will not have our volunteers in school to help wrap, I['m sure there will be opportunity for LSAs to help out if numbers are small.
The money raised for this project will as you know go to our outdoor fund. During the Spring 2 term, we are having a lockable outdoor large sand pit created for our playground and we are also purchasing a range of outdoor musical instruments to be placed within the outer edge of the woodland for the children to play during playtime and during curriculum time. I am meeting with The Friends of Great Binfields shortly to discuss a proposal and together we will present our plans to you.
So a huge thank you to all of you who are assisting with our fundraising drive. The children really will benefit.
