Belonging and Identity Day
Tue 24 Sep 2024Yesterday we held our first ever 'Belonging and Identity Day' at Great Binfields. Building a greater sense of belonging is a key part of our equality and diversity work. 'Belonging' is that sense of being somewhere, where you can be confident that you will fit in and be safe in your identity: a feeling of being at home.
During the day, we explored what ‘Belonging’ and 'Identity' means. We learnt about the diversity of our school community and had opportunities to share and talk about our own identities. We began the day with an assembly. Mrs Abbey and some of our (very brave) Year 6 pupils shared presentations about their identity, heritage, faith and culture. Then the children learned about a diverse range of artists and created their own self-portrait in the style of their choosing. After, each year group focussed on a different poet and wrote their own poetry linked to identity and belonging. We also championed the benefits/ importance of learning British Sign Language and how this can contribute to identity. We learned the Sign Language for the song 'You are my sunshine.'
To enhance Belonging and Identity Day, children came to school wearing clothes to represent their sense of belonging. The clothes could represent their culture and could be part of their national dress. The children could also wear uniform or kit to represent clubs they belong to such as Brownies and Cubs, or a sports club. Some children were just happy wearing their school uniform to show their sense of belonging to Great Binfields Primary School.

Police online safety workshop for Year 5 and 6
Wed 11 Sep 2024Today, pupils in Year 5 and 6 had a visit from the Police to discuss online safety. We discussed the apps we are using and may start using as we get older, and how we can use these safely. We learnt about important safety features, how much information our online activity can reveal about us, our digital footprint and how this can be used by others, as well as cyber bullying (how we can ensure we are not taking part in this or how we report it if we are the victim).
We are so proud of our pupils; they were very respectful, mature and honest and had a number of insightful questions for our visitors. We were impressed with their knowledge of using the internet safely and hope they feel even more empowered after this useful workshop.

There is a real buzz of excitement which is palpable across the school. All of the children have come back in wonderfully, we are so proud of each and every one of them. They are working hard on showing their school values, particularly respect, through their use of manners. It feels like we have never been away! Take a look at the pictures to see what some of your children have been up to :-)

Miller's Ark farm visit with Early Years
Tue 16 Jul 2024The Early Years children had a wonderful experience this morning, as we had Miller's Ark farm come to visit us on the school field! The children were lucky enough to say hello to donkeys, sheep, goats, chickens, ducks and some super noisy pigs! We learnt some facts about each animal such as what they eat and we even got to gently stroke them. The animals were very friendly guests and the children loved every minute!

Year 5 and 6 summer play
Fri 12 Jul 2024Wow, what an amazing performance by Year 5 and 6 this year. Over the years we have seen many brilliant productions and each time we think it could not be bettered, but this week’s performance was amongst the best. The children were all so confident and really portrayed their character’s with lots of energy and charisma. They projected their voices like professionals and everyone put their heart and soul into the singing. We are really looking forward to seeing the Year 6 continue to develop their acting talents in Year 7 and the Year 5s step into the shoes of the Year 6. There are lots of talented actors.
We all know how much work goes into these performances and everyone involved should be congratulated on an incredible end to a busy of a year.

Year 1 Road Safety
Tue 09 Jul 2024This morning, as part of Year 1's Outdoor Week, we focused on Road Safety. We learnt about different types of crossings that help keep us safe (how many can you identify?) as well as how to be safe and be seen when out on our bikes or scooters. The children went out in small groups to identify information related to roads and how to cross safely. Children were confident recognising the zigzag lines outside of school, as well as parallel lines. They knew these shouldn't be parked on as it stops the children from being able to identify hazards easily and therefore cross the road safely. Other groups created information videos, posters or leaflets about how to stay safe around the roads. It was great to see how hard some children worked on these. We also saw children using vehicles in their role play to act out how to cross the road; this is a great example of 'learning through play'.
Children learnt the song below (see link) in order to remember that we need to:
Stop
Look
Listen
Think
The 'Think' is particularly important; we cannot always hear electric vehicles moving, so we need to 'think' and double check it is safe when crossing the road.
Why not ask the children how much they can remember about keeping safe? We were very impressed with how sensible they were when out today.

Year 2's 'Hike' to Mill field, Old Basing
Tue 02 Jul 2024The Year 2 children had a brilliant time on Tuesday 2nd July on their Geography field trip to Mill Field. Our Geography learning is based on a book called 'Hike', so it was very fitting for the children to go on a walk as part of this learning. Before we left, the children packed their bags with their walking kit, DT teddy bears and a picnic lunch. We headed out of the school gates and were on route! We soon arrived at Mill Field and the children were put into smaller groups. They each took part in 4 activities; feeding the ducks, playing in the park, flying paper planes and games of pooh sticks. The children thoroughly enjoyed being out in nature. We then ate our picnic lunches before walking back to school.

Sports Day 24
Wed 26 Jun 2024Great Binfields School recently had a fantastic sports day. The children showed so much enthusiasm and displayed the school's values brilliantly. The children demonstrated remarkable resilience and there was a strong sense of cooperation as they cheered each other on. Many students aspired to surpass their personal bests, showing true determination and growth.
The staff team is immensely proud of all the children for their efforts and sportsmanship. A special congratulations goes to the Yellow team, this year's winners. This was joyfully announced on Monday with yellow bubbles filling the courtyard. Well done to everyone involved, and especially to the Yellow team—congratulations, GBP!

Year 1 trip to Windsor Castle
Tue 25 Jun 2024Year 1 had a fantastic trip to Windsor Castle on Monday, as part of their topic: Kings, Queens and Castles. Windsor Castle was very busy with lots of tourists, however the children were great at listening to and following instructions so that we could see St George's Chapel, the grounds and the Castle itself.
During the visit we visited Queen Elizabeth II's resting place, looked at the motte and bailey style castle and viewed a variety of grand rooms with glistening gold decoration. Children were particularly interested in the paintings on the ceilings in some of the rooms as well as the shiny swords and armour! Some children asked lots of questions about the Great Fire of 1992 and how the rooms were restored.
Children did brilliantly with all the walking and despite being a hot day, many still had energy for their coach ride home!
