Great Greek Fun!
Thu 14 Nov 2019Over the last two weeks, Year Four have enjoyed their Topic Launch day and their Ancient Greek dress up day. The children looked brilliant in their costumes - togas may be the way forward! Both days were full of all sorts of activities ranging from food tasting (Goats cheese and figs were a first for many), wreath making, Gorgon inspired mask making, exploring patterns in the Ancient Greek alphabet, using Art straws to create Ancient Greek inspired columns as well as cooking lamb koftas and flat bread. One activity that particularly got us thinking was creating a replacement for Zeus as King of the Gods. The children worked in groups to think about the powers and personalities that would make a suitable new leader. Another highlight was singing a Greek inspired song that the children have been learning in Music - Mrs Irons would be very proud.
We know Year Four have thoroughly enjoyed their History research into Ancient Greek life as well as hearing the gripping tales of Greek Mythology. We look forward to what the rest of the topic has in store for us.

The Great Fire of London!
Wed 13 Nov 2019In year 2 we have been learning about the Great Fire of London. We learnt all about how the fire spread across London. We then built our own houses from 1666. With the help of Mr Quilter, we recreated the Great fire of London to see how it spread across the houses! We thought about how the people of London would of felt to watch their homes burning. As you can see from their faces, the children were in shock to see how quickly the fire spread from one to another. -
Year 2 fire service visit
Mon 11 Nov 2019Year 2 were visited by the fire service today. As part of our topic we are learning about how to stay safe if there is a fire. We learnt some catchy rhymes to remind us and hopefully the children can share them with their families to help them as well. We all found the songs and games really fun and we now know the importance of keeping safe around fire. Remember: 'Get out, stay out, call 999!' -

Year 2 Great Fire of London Tree house theatre visit
Fri 08 Nov 2019Today year 2 were visited by Ben from Treehouse Theatre. We went back in time and learnt all about the Great Fire of London. To begin the session we sat round and Ben re-enacted the story. The children were very excited by this and it was interesting to hear the various things that happened when the fire broke out. We then took part in a workshop where we had to pretend to be someone who was around during the Great Fire of London. The children dressed as their characters and then chose jobs that they would have done. They then re-enacted each part of the story. They had to think carefully about what items they might take with them and how they would feel about all those that they have left behind. They then acted out trying to put out the fire, and realised what a tricky job this would have been in 1666. To end the workshop they had to work as a team to use the items they had to pay the ferry to take them across to the other side. Overall the session was a great success and the children gained a great deal of knowledge from it.

Veterans meet and greet!
Thu 07 Nov 2019A number of children from Year 6 had the incredible opportunity to meet over a dozen veterans from across Hampshire today, hosted at our local Tesco, Chineham. The children were absolutely fascinated by their personal anecdotes and exuding passion for their previous careers in the army. They also learnt lots about the potential opportunities they could experience in such a career, including the ability to travel across the world. A knowledgeable representative from Middle Wallop Air Museum also brought a range of artefacts for the children to explore and explained their unique importance for particular roles in the army. One such example was a vital pair of gloves, which would have been worn by pilots, which included an individual slot for your forefinger as well as your thumb!
After this, the children were then able to share evidence of a range of their learning from our coverage of World War Two last half term and spoke passionately about how they had empathised with a variety of roles from the time. The veterans were blown away by their creativity, presentation and ability to verbalise their understanding of the subject.
Once we were back at school, the children were able to share their learning and experiences with those who did not attend through a variety of pictures, videos and personal conversations with the veterans.
It was an absolute privilege to meet these gentlemen today and the children were able to make real connections between their learning and individual stories! All children represented our school so beautifully too. Have a little look at our pictures to see what we got up to…

Year 5 at Toucan Travel
Wed 23 Oct 2019Year 5 have created travel brochures to be displayed in the window of Toucan Travel in Chineham Shopping Centre. Today, 10 children delivered these brochures to the shop where they got to role play what it's like to be a Travel Agent. A huge thank you to Kirsty at Toucan Travel who made this all possible. Take some time over the half term break to admire the children's hard work. Perhaps the brochures will convince you to take a trip to Paris!

Year 4 Temptation Visit
Wed 16 Oct 2019Year Four has been exploring the concept of 'Temptation' in RE this half term. They have been thinking about what temptation means, what they have experienced of temptation, how the bible depicts temptation and much more. To round this learning off, the children wrote questions that they would like to ask someone of faith about their experiences of temptation. We were lucky enough to have Mrs Copping (a local vicar) and Mrs Lowe (an integral part of Christ Church and well established visitor to our school) come in to discuss their experiences and even be brave enough to answer the children's questions.
The children didn't hold back and really delved deep with their questions. Some included:
-Why did the devil keep tempting Jesus and why did Jesus keep saying no?
-Have you ever been tempted?
-What do you do to resist temptation?
-Have you ever helped someone else who was being tempted?
-If you were Adam, would you have listened to Eve?
-Is temptation always bad? And is there always a consequence?
As you can see from the children's faces, they were highly engaged and so interested in what our visitors had to say. Mrs Copping and Mrs Lowe used brilliant, relatable examples to guide the discussion and also shared quite personal insights into their faith and experiences. We are incredibly grateful to them for giving up their time. We are also very proud of how enthusiastic yet respectful the children were.

Subway visit Year 2
Tue 15 Oct 2019Today, in Year 2, we had an exciting visit from Subway. This was to support our topic Funny Bones. We have been looking at healthy eating and how much fat is in certain products. Last week we carried out a project to design a low fat sandwich. Subway then came in to discuss this further and we were able to create our sandwiches! We were taught the correct way to make a Subway and how to wrap them safely so that we could take them home. Year 2 had a brilliant time and we learnt lots about what is in the food we eat.
