  • Awesome Avon Tyrrell - Day 1

    Mon 07 Mar 2022

We have had a glorious start to our residential here at Avon Tyrrell and have been very lucky with the weather as the sunshine welcomed us upon arrival! After a successful journey on the coach, the children were incredibly excited to find out who they would be sharing a room with; the excitement soon passed as they realised that they then had to make their own beds! With a little cooperation and teamwork, all of the children have a cosy bed to sleep in tonight.

Our afternoon was kick started with a super activity (pioneering) where the children built their very own catapults. They had to use some intricate knot styles to secure the poles in place as the catapults were giant size! The children were then able to score points based on the accuracy of their aims and success of the structure of their catapults – a few collapses ensued throughout the activity! We then enjoyed a leisurely stroll around the vast grounds, even witnessing a family of deer casually munching on the grass right before us.

Each year at Avon Tyrrell, we also like to keep a daily diary to help us reflect on all of the wonderful activities we get up whilst we are here. The children were keen to record their initial thoughts of Avon Tyrrell so far and enjoyed thinking ahead to what they are excited about. We have a campfire activity in store for us this evening and will make sure we wrap up warm before enjoying an evening of singing songs and celebrating that we have finally made it here!

The children have settled in beautifully and are already making all of the adults incredibly proud. Here are a few quotes from the children themselves about their day so far:

“It has been a really exciting day and I even learnt something new as I didn’t know I could build a catapult before today! I look forward to the rest of the week and what it has in store for us. Also, the food is amazing.” Leonardo

“I really enjoyed making the catapult today as it’s the first time I have ever done this. Also, the food has been delicious so far. What a birthday I’m having! I am really pleased with the children in my dorm too. P.S. Hi Mum! “ Alfie – birthday boy today!

"It was very exciting and action packed! My favourite part was settling into the rooms and finding out who I was with. I'm really looking forward to canoeing as I have done activities which are similar before." Mihalis

Keep checking in throughout the week to see what your wonderful children are getting up to. Take a look at a selection of photographs from today, more will be uploaded over the next few days.

  • Year 4 Theatre Crime

Mon 07 Mar 2022 Miss Hanafin & Miss Grove

Year 4 had a very exciting morning today, with a Topic Launch to set us off on our Lights, Camera, Action topic. The theme of the day was all centred around a jewellery robbery that happened in a local theatre, with 4 suspects - all of which had the perfect motives and opportunities to commit the crime. Our job, for the next few weeks, will be to write suspense stories all about what we think happened. Detective Grove and Detective Hanafin will be revealing the truth in a few weeks! Today, we looked at the evidence left at the scene of the crime, sketched the stolen items as well as studied the profiles of those we suspect. The value of creativity was most certainly demonstrated in Year 4 today as well as discussions around our concepts of 'respect', 'justice' and 'choice'.

  • Celebrating Diversity Reading and Writing Week

Fri 04 Mar 2022 Mrs Osborne

This week has been 'Celebrating Diversity Reading and Writing Week' at Great Binfields. We started the week with an assembly all about diversity - we recapped on what this means and why it is important to celebrate diversity.

Then, throughout the week, each year phase have looked  a different text linking to a different area of diversity as listed below:

EYFS – (Gender) – ‘Pink is for Boys’ by Robb Pearlman

Year 1 and Year 2- (Disabilities) – ‘What Happened to You?’ By James Catchpole

    Year 3 and 4 – (Race) – ‘Sulwe’ by Lupita Nyong’o

Year 5 and 6 – (Travellers) – ‘Yokki and the Parno Gry’ by Richard O’Neill

From these texts, the children then took part in a variety of activities including Reading, Writing and other curriculum areas too. As well as this, World Book Day was celebrated on Thursday 3rd March. The children came into school dressed in their pyjamas and took part in World Book Day themed learning. They also enjoyed a bed time story, hot chocolate and marshmallows with their class teacher at the end of the day.

  • Year 5/6 Netball Match

    Thu 03 Mar 2022 Miss O'Hagan

Our school motto 'Don't give up until you are proud' was certainly shown by all of our players in our most recent Netball Match.

Great Binfields played their first Netball match vs Rucstall and Miss O'Hagan has never seen such passion and team work. Although the score was not in our favour, our team were resilient and kept their heads held high with a smile on their face. GBP were praised by the other schools teacher and spectators as they recognised this too. What a way to represent our school!

We will continue to work on our Netball skills and look forward to getting onto the court again soon.

  • Author Visit- Gigi and the Giant Ladle

Thu 03 Mar 2022 Mrs Davis

Gigi and the Giant Ladle by Leanne Edney

Today our Early years children were extremely lucky to have a real life author visit them and share their book. As part of our writing week and of course World Book Day, we have been sharing our love of books and stories together. Mrs Edney (Max and Cove's mum) has written and published a wonderful story called Gigi and the Giant Ladle. This story shares similar growth mindset values and language that we promote in our school and the children loved listening to the story and joining in throughout the book. I am sure that the children will be able to share parts of the story with you, especially the part where Gigi shouts 'I've got it!' Thank you so very much for coming in and sharing such a fantastic story with the children and we look forward to more stories in the future.

  • Pancake Day

Wed 02 Mar 2022 Miss Khan

On Tuesday the children of Rowan and Birch Classes celebrated Pancake Day.  We had lots of fun mixing up the batter and watching the pancakes be made.  All the children were then given opportunity to tuck in and enjoy a pancake with either sugar, lemon or maple syrup!  Back in class we learned about why we have Pancake Day and discovered that it is also called Shrove Tuesday.  We looked at how other countries celebrate Shrove Tuesday and were surprised to see that not everyone has pancakes.  To finish the day we learnt a poem about pancakes which the children were keen to share with their families at home.

  • Y4 Extreme Earth round up

    Thu 17 Feb 2022

On the penultimate day of our Extreme Earth topic, Year 4 had a full day exploring earthquakes and volcanoes. In the morning, we thought as architects and looked at how buildings could be designed in earthquake prone areas. We then went onto exploring volcanoes using some really informative online resources to extend our knowledge. We finalised this by creating a diagram of a volcano using coloured paper. Tomorrow we are going to learn about the "Pacific Ring of Fire" .... intriguing!

In the afternoon, the children got the chance to showcase their INCREDIBLE two week projects linked to Extreme Earth. We had cakes, animations, posters, interviews, Lego construction, models and so much more to demonstrate all of the learning. Seesaw was the perfect tool to share with each other what everyone got up to. A great time was had by all and a huge well done was shared for all of the hard work.

Finally, the wonderful Mrs Lowe delivered a session to our Y4s all about the impact of a volcano. To say we were excited would be a bit of an understatement!

We have absolutely loved this topic and are so proud of all that Y4 have achieved.

  • Year 2 DT Day

    Thu 17 Feb 2022

Year 2 had an exciting design and technology day this week where they made their very own puppets. They started the day by learning about different types of puppets and created designs based on their initial research. The children then made their own finger puppet by cutting felt and sticking it together. They added decorations to turn it into a character from their Traditional Tale stories that they have been writing. The children practised sewing techniques and learnt about running stitch and over stich. They certainly had to use growth mindset when practising these skills. The children all had a great day and  worked so hard. They are looking forward to sharing them with their families at the Traditional Tales Tea Party which is being held later in the year.

  • Year 5 Canopic Jars

Thu 17 Feb 2022 Mrs Osborne

The year 5 children have been working so hard to design, make and paint clay Canopic Jars which are fit to be displayed in any museum. Before designing their jars, they looked at lots of examples to get an idea of the shapes, colours and designs the Ancient Egyptians used. When the Canopic Jars were finished, we set up an art gallery in the classrooms so that the children could evaluate their own work and other children’s work.

Did you know that in Ancient Egyptian times, each canopic jar guarded a different organ?

    1. Imsety had a human head, protected the liver.

    2. Qebehsenuf had the head of a falcon and guarded the intestines

    3. Hapy had a baboon head protected the lungs.

    4. Duamatef had the head of a jackal, and guarded the stomach

The four canopic jars were put into a special chest which went into the tomb with the mummy.

  • Y4 Art Day

Tue 15 Feb 2022 Miss Hanafin

Today Y4 had a full day of Art as we piece together the final stages of our Great Wave inspired work. Over the whole half term, we have been exploring the artist Hokusai and using our line drawing skills to create our wave. Today we got a bit messy and worked on our collage, themed with the colours of the sunset. There was a lot of hard work and determination needed in the morning to make sure we used the overlapping collage skill that we had been working on. Mrs Harvey, our Art leader, was very impressed with the quality of work. Whilst this was happening, the lovely Y4 team pulled children out into small groups to explore some wax resist waves using candles of all things! Finally, in the afternoon, we looked at contrasting colours on the colour wheel in order to represent a tornado! We learnt in our Geography and English that tornados are formed when hot and cold air collide, so this was the perfect opportunity for art inspiration.

Have a look at the photos to see what we got up to.
