  • Y4 Treehouse Theatre

    Tue 15 Jun 2021

This week, Y4 have had a brilliant time enjoying a themed day all around the Celts and Romans. We are feeling incredibly grateful the have Ben from the Tree House Theatre come into school and do the play in a day 'The Romans are Coming!'. We have missed these opportunities over the last year and this was exactly what we needed. We are always so, so impressed by Ben's talents and his wonderful flair for story telling and Tuesday was no different. The children were truly in awe of him and were so engaged with the story. We learnt lots along the way whilst we challenged our expressive and dramatic skills. A huge thank you to Ben for sharing this experience with us.

Whilst not in the hall, the children got to free choice their way around a series of stations. One station was using their 'cut, stick and stitch' skills to create a Roman inspired shield (what brilliant sewers you are!). Another was to create a Roman mosaic. At another station we read about the Roman Gods and Goddesses - we were surprised to see some similarities with the Greeks. Hmmm interesting! We worked on our Roman numerals, drew Celtic woad patterns on our faces and had time to share our learning with friends.

The adults in Y4 enjoyed Tuesday as much as the children and this was all down to the hugely enthusiastic nature of Ash and Pine Class. A wonderful day of learning had by all!

  • We are all stuck in to our Art Festival Week

Thu 27 May 2021 Ms Rogers

Our Art Festival week has been amazing so far and our children have surpassed all of our expectations - the quality of art, poetry and music has been phenomenal. The Lost Words book has really inspired them all and it is great hearing conversations about ensuring we try to call plants and animals by their proper name.

It is disappointing that we can not hold our art exhibition as normal however Mrs Harvey is kindly putting together a montage of photos and videos from throughout the school to share with you all after half term. We will also make our traditional photo album as well.

Hope you enjoy the photographs below - many more to come!

  • Year 5 Author Talk

Thu 20 May 2021 Mrs Osborne

Today Year 5 had a fantastic talk and question and answer session from Janina Ramirez, the author of their whole class text ‘Riddle of the Runes’. Janina spoke to them all about what inspired her to become a writer and gave the children some top tips about editing their own writing. Janina is a Viking expert and was so impressed at the children’s knowledge and their responses to her questions.

Year 5 only have a couple more chapters to go before they reach the end of Riddle of the Runes and lots are now desperate to read the sequel- ‘Way of the Waves’.

  • Art Festival Week is Fast Approaching

Sat 15 May 2021 Mrs Harvey

We have some great news to share with you. Our Art Festival week is approaching soon and the school staff have been busy preparing and resourcing this week for you all. I wanted to inform you that this year the theme is ' The Lost Words.' I hope you are as excited as us that we are able to hold this event this year and you can now start to chat with your family and friends about this theme and start to look forward to it.

    Have a great weekend everyone!

  • Year 1 Secret Garden Day

    Thu 13 May 2021

Once again, Year One is coming to the end of another brilliant topic - The Secret Garden. This topic has given us the chance to really use our imaginations to create unique and special versions of our own secret gardens and Narnia-style lands. We have spent a lot of time outside enjoying our school grounds and to celebrate the end of this topic, we had a Secret Garden Day. The children took part in various activities such as creating Kandinsky styled flowers, decorating their own flower pot, creating their own Secret Garden and planting cress. Unfortunately, our outside activity was postponed due to the weather. Luckily, we were able to do this on Friday! We explored our woodlands and had our very own treasure hunt! The children had lots of challenges to face in these activities but had so much fun completing them. The Year One team were really impressed with their creative and engaged attitude to their learning. What a wonderful day! Have a look at the photos to see what we got up to.

  • Year 2 Seaside design technology day

    Mon 10 May 2021

Today Y2 had a design technology day. We were thinking about what food items we would take with us for a picnic on the seaside. We had to think carefully about our ideas and we based them on a seaside theme. We begun our day by making savoury wraps. We used cheese spread, ham, lettuce and sweetcorn to create seaside pictures on our wraps. Next we made edible cake decorations for cupcakes. We thought carefully about what designs we could have. There were a wide range of unique designs - from fish made with orange segments to beach umbrellas made from skittles! In the afternoon we then had a go at making fruit sculptures where we used fruit to make seaside pictures. Once again designs were all very impressive! Overall the children all had a great day exploring and enjoyed being creative with a seaside picnic.

  • Year 5/6 Try To Beat Their Personal Bests On Their New Fitness Trail

Wed 05 May 2021 Ms Rogers

Our new Year 5/6 Fitness Trail behind Year 5 and 6 classrooms is now complete and the children have been enjoying using the different pieces of equipment today. Challenges to improve their core and upper arm strength were set and they soon got the idea of trying to beat their own personal bests. The children certainly showed resilience on the monkey bars and when scaling across the climbing wall.

We feel it is important for our children across the different phases of primary to have access to good quality fitness equipment. Primarily to keep them fit and active on a regular basis throughout the school week but to also develop good fitness habits so these are ingrained by the time they leave us in Year 6.

  • Year 2 Beach Day

    Wed 28 Apr 2021

Today in Year 2 we enjoyed our 'Beach Day' in support of our 'Wish You Were Here' topic. In true British fashion, we had the weather for it! To start the day the children made and enjoyed some vanilla ice cream. Then they created a flag design for a sandcastle. The children also enjoyed water play, outdoor games and time in the sand pit. In the afternoon they took part in some beach themed art activities which included shell sketching and watercolour painting. A great day was had by all!

  • Rock 2 the Beat

    Tue 27 Apr 2021

On Thursday, our Year 4 and Year 5 children were treated to quite the show! Members of the 'Rock 2 the Beat' project came into school to not only share this exciting new opportunity but to also play some live music for us. The children were greeted by the song 'Superstition' being played on the electric guitar, the bass and of course the drums. The children were bobbing along and were completely fascinated by what they saw. The adults felt very inspired after also (it made us realise how much we miss seeing live music!). All of the children were so respectful and there was certainly a 'buzz' in the room - you could feel the enthusiasm and amazement.

Families have been emailed information about this project but here is a snapshot of information:

"A team of specialist tutors from Hampshire Music Service visited school and performed to the children today to talk about an exciting new provision called “Rock2theBeat”. We are hoping to launch this provision at Great Binfields Primary School from September with sessions during the school day.

    "Rock 2 the Beat"

Our aim is to deliver expert tuition for children in contemporary Rock and Pop music, focusing on both individual skills and playing within an ensemble. The instruments taught as part of the project are electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, drums and voice.

Teaching is via a mix of small group skills-based lessons and whole band sessions. Alongside this, a comprehensive set of resources are available to support learning outside of the sessions, which include song music, instructional videos, technical exercises and backing tracks to practise along to.

The programme is delivered by two experienced HMS teachers who have extensive experience not only in instrumental tuition but also in performance.

Rock 2 the Beat is delivered on a term-by-term basis with a performance at the end of each one, giving the pupils the chance to showcase everything they have learnt to their peers, friends and family."

  • Year 4 - Lights, CAMERA, Action!

    Tue 27 Apr 2021

This morning, Year 4 had a rather exciting visitor come down to share some knowledge with us - our very own Ms Rogers! She gave a wonderful talk all about the history of cameras, all the way from a camera obscura to our modern day digital cameras. We learnt how photography was not always instant and often meant a lengthy wait between film being developed. We also learnt that the actual capturing of an image was not always instant and that many years ago, people had to sit for an awfully long time - leading to some rather grumpy looking expressions. Ms Rogers shared her experiences and interesting videos with us, but bringing it all to life was the actual cameras she brought down with her. We got a hands on understanding of the history and development of cameras and the children were fascinated by what they saw.

Ms Rogers has a real passion for photography and it was really lovely for the children to hear how enthusiastic she is about this subject. She spoke about a recent course she had been on to further her skills, proving that learning really is a life long experience. Ms Rogers also shared with us how she uses photography to capture special memories and moments she does not want to forget. The children were amazed by some of the photos in her albums. I wonder what interests the children have now that may turn into life long passions?

This afternoon, the children in Year 4 then got a chance to sketch some of the cameras they had seen, through their own lenses. What a fab addition to our topic!
