E-Safety advice direct from Hampshire Local Authority
Wed 06 Dec 2017With the Christmas holidays approaching and the prospect of children perhaps receiving digital media as a gift in some shape or form – tablets and gaming consoles, for example – we thought it would be an appropriate time to remind you about the responsible use of such devices.
Following, the recent news stories relating to the Police’s increasing concerns about child exploitation through social media ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-42224148 ), please do take the time to set up robust parental controls on devices and ensure that you set the passwords and codes so that only you know them.
There is some helpful advice relating to this on Hampshire County Council’s website: https://www.hants.gov.uk/socialcareandhealth/childrenandfamilies/safeguardingchildren/onlinesafety
If your children are likely to be using the internet, you may find it helpful for them to be aware and to have viewed this website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/5_7/
Helpful advice is also available from the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) website:
https://www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/keeping-children-safe/online-safety/
Aside from the risk of exploitation and cyber bullying, it is unfortunate in this day and age that content exists on social media that would be inappropriate, and potentially harmful, for young children to view.
If you receive images or videos on Snapchat, Instagram, Whatsapp or via any other social media featuring people that are naked or are sexual in nature, these should be deleted immediately and reported to the Police on the non-emergency 101 telephone number. Many people are still unaware that showing or sharing such images or videos with others could mean they are committing a crime. However, if a genuine mistake is made, it would be treated as such by the Police. -
What a stunning couple of performances - EYFS Nativity
Tue 05 Dec 2017Our EYFS Children have certainly made us all beam with pride yesterday and today as they performed their Nativity play in front of their families. The children all acted, danced and sang beautifully and our narrators did very well too, reading out the story so clearly!
It has been lovely seeing the children blossom over the last couple of days when on stage. It is clear to say they have really grown in confidence.

Year 4 Groovy Greek Day
Fri 01 Dec 2017Groovy Greek Day!
Year 4 had a super Greek day today. They all looked amazing in their outfits! The children had a challenge of writing their names in Greek first thing which was tricky as the Greek alphabet is quite different to ours and some of us had letters missing! After break we had a Greek cuisine tasting session that everyone enjoyed even if we didn’t like all of the different foods. We tried feta, olives, Greek yoghurt, pitta, houmous, tzatziki and baklava. In the afternoon, we had the option to create a Greek temple (thank you for all the toilet/kitchen rolls!), a victory olive wreath or a Medusa mask. We will be putting up the photos soon for you to have a look at.

Online Safety Awareness for Parents
Fri 01 Dec 2017With Christmas fast approaching it may be that technological devices are on some children's Christmas lists. UK Safer Internet Centre have put together some really useful resources and advice for parents who are considering buying such equipment, from tablets to phones, to smart tv's and gaming devices. There are even top tips for how to set up parental controls on such devices encouraging parents to be aware of what their child has access to.
You may have also seen news reports about inappropriate children's videos on YouTube. These may start off as harmless videos such as Peppa Pig or Minecraft tutoring however they then become violent or disturbing. By clicking on the link below you will find information about how to be aware of such situations and what to do if this occurs.
This information is not here to scare but to raise awareness of security measures that parents may want to consider, ensuring that children are watching and accessing content appropriate to their age.

Year 1 Food Festival
Thu 30 Nov 2017To mark the ending of the Year One topics - Food and Farms and then Festivals - we celebrated with a Food Festival! We tried lots of food that originates from different countries in the world such as India, China, Spain, Italy and more. Some of the foods would be eaten at the festivals we have been learning about this term! The children had a chance to look at some of the food, farm and festivals books we have been enjoying as well as find countries on the maps, have a dance to some music from other cultures and share what they have enjoyed in their learning so far. It was a brilliant morning and the children were so enthusiastic (and brave) to try lots of food. It was also lovely to see the children reflecting on their learning and finishing our topics with a fantastic celebration. -
Great Fire of London in Year 2!
Wed 29 Nov 2017This morning, as part of their current history topic, Year 2 built their own Pudding Lane and then set it alight to recreate the Great Fire of London of 1666. As the fire started to rip through the houses, London burned before their eyes! They discussed the reasons as to why the fire spread so quickly and the measures that King Charles II took to save a fire like that from ever happening again. -
Oak Class GIST Road Safety Trip
Wed 22 Nov 2017This morning, Year 5 had the pleasure of visiting the head office of GIST, in Basingstoke, to learn about road safety when a lorry may be around. The children had a great time learning lots of facts about the stopping distances of a lorry and the blind spots that could prevent them from being seen. Oak Class then had the opportunity to sit in the driver's seat of the lorry and see the blind spots for themselves. They all had a thoroughly enjoyable time! Have a look at our photos to see how much we enjoyed ourselves.

Tesco Remembrance Display
Sun 12 Nov 2017This time the children in KS2 have created the display for the window in Tesco and it looks absolutely stunning. The children have been learning about the significance of the poppy, reflecting and thinking about those who have/ are serving for our country.
Miss Lemar set the children the challenge to create the poppies by developing their weaving skills. Everyone had to follow a set of detailed instructions with a great amount of perseverance and determination. The best part of the project is how unique each of the poppies are, just like the real flowers. Thank you to all the children as your perseverance has really produced a very special display, that reminds others of the importance of the poppy. Whilst Miss Lemar and Mrs Barnhouse were popping it up lots of shoppers stopped and made lovely comments, a display worth having a look at. Well done everyone.

Diwali Fun in Year 1
Fri 10 Nov 2017This week the children in Year 1 have been learning all about Diwali as part of their Festivals topic. Everyone has enjoyed learning about this and it has been wonderful to see the children so engaged with their learning. In literacy we have been focusing on information texts all about Diwali. Can the children point out a at heading, caption, image and the text at home, in a non-fiction book? They then used this information to create their own Diwali information booklets, which they will be bringing home to share. In Art the children have been having a go at making their own rangoli patterns, a particular favourite was creating them using colourful rice. We have also been listening to music that would be used in a Diwali celebration and watched videos all about Diwali and the Diwali story. The children should be able to tell you some facts about this at home. Here are some photographs of what we have been up too.
