  • Basingstoke Schools Finals Athletics Competition

Fri 27 Feb 2015 Miss Rogers

On Thursday 26th February, Miss Grainger took our super athletes to Brighton Hill Community School for the finals as they qualified 3rd in a previous round. The team have been busy preparing for this event prior to going on Thursday by coming in on a Wednesday morning at 8am for their training. Each child had to compete in a sprint event, a throwing event and a jumping event to which they all did so, so well. There were 8 schools at the finals although 22 schools across the town have taken part and I am very pleased to announce that our school finished 5th overall. We are so proud of our team.

Faye came 2nd in the sprint event and Amelie came 3rd. Harry came 1st in his Sprint event and Jett came first 1st in the target throw. Faye had a good day as she also came 2nd in the standing long jump event. Wow! Thank you to all of you for representing our school so brilliantly - your sportsmanship was also fantastic. You are a credit to our school.  We would like to thank the crowd of supporters - they really did appreciate your support. I would also like to thank Miss Grainger who has coached the children and made this event possible.

  • Maple Class visit the Gordon Brown Centre with their teddies!

    Wed 25 Feb 2015
Maple class had a fantastic time at the Gordon Brown Centre taking part in lots of exciting activities. The day was based around the stories of Percy the Park Keeper as we enjoyed reading the books at school. We did some activities based around using our senses, including making smelly cocktails and feeling different trees. We went on a treasure hunt and found gold coins, which tasted very yummy!! We then got to make shelter for our teddies and had a surprise visit from Percy himself! The day ended with us meeting all the animals they have at the centre!! We all had a super fun packed day and behaved impeccably.

1st place= Isobel from Chestnut Class

2nd place= Sarah from Willow Class

3rd place= Summer from Oak Class

  • Book and Film Week finale

Fri 13 Feb 2015 Mrs Barnhouse

What a great day we have had at Great Binfields! As our finale to Book and Film Week, where children were given a specific book and film adaptation to learn about throughout the week, today we dressed up as a character from the book we focused on. Whilst Year 3/4 turned into Hogwarts for the day, Year 5/6 had a LOT of gnomes after learning Gnomeo and Juliet. There was lots of effort put into costumes, by children and adults alike! Some fantastic writing came out of this week which we look forward to sharing in classes. Have a look at the pictures below to see what a fantastic day was had.

  • Story Teller

Wed 11 Feb 2015 Miss Collins

Today a story teller, called Chris Thomas, visited the school as part of our Book, Film and Writing week. She told a variety of stories and myths about giants, heroes and  mythical creatures. All the children thoroughly enjoyed her visit and have been inspired to write their own stories!

  • It's Book and Film Week!

Mon 09 Feb 2015 Miss Rogers
Have you told your parents and carers what you have been up to so far this week? I have been in EYFS and Year 5/6 today and I was very impressed with what the children were learning. Tomorrow I will be visiting Y1, 2, 3 and 4. On Wednesday the children are looking forward to welcoming a story teller into school. We will report on how that goes. I am also looking forward to seeing you in your costumes on Friday.. I'm busy thinking about mine!
  • Children's Fair - a huge success!!

Sun 08 Feb 2015 Miss Rogers

I am do not normally get nervous about new things generally but the children have been talking about 'The Children's Fair' for months - basically saying it has always been the best thing since sliced bread!!!

'So no pressure there then Miss Rogers - it has to be at least as good as before and it must have a Terror Tomb!' said one teacher with a huge smile on their face!!! So yes, I had a few nerves running up to it last week...but actually I didn't need to as the children did a marvellous job of running it all themselves.

     - I firstly must thank the Children's Fair Committee - the 5 core members who made up the Leadership team did a grand job of sharing information, making decisions and relaying this to the stall holders. They were also brilliant with helping to set up and tidying away afterwards too!

     - Next the stall holders - you were very eager, well prepared and you ensured that you were polite and courteous when children came to your stalls. Thank you. I particularly loved to see you cooperate so well with others and the originality of your poster campaigns were fab!

     - Next the Fair Goers - thank you so much for bringing in your pocket money to spend at the fair. You have helped to raise funds for playtime and lunchtime equipment. These will be ordered this week so hopefully, your new equipment will arrive in time for the first week back. I was also really pleased with the number of children who came to say thank you for allowing it to happen. Your politeness made me smile.

    - Thank you also to the parents who helped the children organise their stalls, provide equipment, hunt for old books and toys to donate and bake cakes (sorry once again for the misunderstanding regarding numbers - I can not believe the children came home asking for the numbers they did!!!)

    - Finally thank you to our Support staff and Teachers who helped with fine details and ensured that all of the children had good fun! It was lovely to see so many of them all joining in with the children - that is so important to me!!

On Monday, our Children's Fair committee will work out how much profit they have made once they take off the expenditure... I am pleased to say though...I am positive they have made a tidy profit. News of this will be shared asap. Well done everyone -it was a great success!!!

  • Grandparents' Day for our Year 1 Children

Thu 05 Feb 2015 Miss Rogers

Today our Year 1 Children were so excited about inviting their grandparents and close relatives in to school to talk about toys. The children had written some instructions for a game and they had to see if they were understandable. There were also some other traditional games to play with and our visitors had the chance to talk about what they played with when they were young.

I am so grateful to our visitors for either giving up their free time or for taking an afternoon off work. Today's experience  brought the children's learning alive and that is so, so important. The children really enjoyed it and we are hopeful that our visitors did too. Thank you also to my super team who made it all possible.
