  • Year 2 Outdoor Week update

Fri 30 Jun 2017 Mrs Barnhouse

Year 2 have continued to be busy outdoors this week. On Wednesday children were out identifying which trees grow in our woodland, recognising the leaves which link to class doors. Throughout the rest of the week the children have been great at noticing and discussing similarities and differences of the leaves they have found, making suggestions as to which tree it could have come from. Children also went on a journey around the woodlands in order to create a journey crown. As they walked around they had to collect items to put into their crown; some of the designs were very adventurous!

Yesterday it was Sycamore's turn to go to the Scout Hut. They certainly enjoyed their day; they collected wood in order to build a fire so that they could cook sausages and marshmallows. They also had to persevere and challenge themselves when climbing the rock climbing wall. Despite a few 'I can't do its' everyone continued to try and with every turn got a step higher on the wall. It was lovely to see the children encouraging one another on, being supportive if they didn't succeed the first time and seeing other children come out of their comfort zone or thrive from the challenge.

Everyone (adults included!) should certainly be tired by the end of this week; it has certainly been a busy but fun and memorable one.

Have a look at the pictures to see what a great week it has been.

  • The start of Year 2 Outdoor Week

Wed 28 Jun 2017 Mrs Barnhouse

Yesterday Year 2 began their Outdoor Week. During this week Year 2 complete a variety of activities outdoors in order to build life skills such as cooperation, dealing with, and resolving challenges and being resilient. Sycamore class worked in the woods yesterday building places for a chosen toy to live in. They had to think carefully about how they created human and physical features within their environment. Two groups even joined forces to create 'Nightlight City' where street lighting made from pine cones ensured all the toys were safe in the town at night! Other groups had ramps for fire trucks to get out, building their house by a river so people had access to water. Whilst Sycamore were in the woods Willow Class walked to the Scout Hut to have a fun-filled day cooking on a fire and climbing up the climbing wall. Whilst it was challenging most children persevered and were very proud of themselves when they were able to ring the bell at the top!

Keep an eye out for what else will be happening this week. We will be outdoors, whatever the weather!

  • Early Years Visit Hillier Gardens

Tue 27 Jun 2017 Miss Lemar

Today was another extremely exciting day for everyone in Early Years, it was our end of year school trip. This year we visited the fantastic Hillier Gardens in Romsey. The children arrived excitedly to school and were very eager to get on the coach and set for our day full of adventure. Once we arrived at Hillier Gardens, we were greeted by members of staff who would be spending the day with us. The children got to explore the stunning gardens, looking at the wonderful flowers, trees and sculptures. The children also participated in a variety of activities; using nets to catch mini beasts, (the most popular catch being the Green Capsid), working in teams to build shelters and pond dipping.  Everyone also got to visit the enormous pond which was full of life, including a massive koi and lots of caterpillars on the fence around it. We went on a nature walk where we saw lots of bumble bees who were drinking the nectar from the flowers. A highlight for lots of us was going through the bamboo tunnel and walking over the wobbly bridge. We were fortunate enough to be able to see some moths up close, some of which were huge, such as the privet hawk moth, and many others that were beautifully coloured.

A super day was had by all and we even got to meet the resident cat!

Your child will be bringing home a leaflet all about Hillier Gardens this week, which contains a discount voucher. It is a super place which is definitely worth visiting, if you have the chance.

  • It is Competitive Sports Day

Fri 23 Jun 2017 Ms Rogers

Thank you to all of you who came and supported our children during the competitive element of Sports Day today. We are looking forward to the vertical grouping team sports on Monday. The children certainly lived our 'tree values' today and showed great determination, resilience and cooperation. We had lots of team spirit too both by our children and our visitors. I could see that you all enjoyed it.

Watch this space to see which team has won - we will be announcing this on Tuesday during our assembly after the team games have taken place.

A huge thank you children for trying your hardest to do well today and a thank you to our marvellous staff team who have as usual, rallied together to make to work.

We will upload lots of photos - I just need to edit them.

After lunch, the children got changed into their graduation robes and were joined by their families to celebrate the end of their time at primary school. • Basingstoke Primary Schools Musical Concert at the Anvil

Wed 21 Jun 2017 Ms Rogers

Our annual Schools Anvil Concert was held yesterday and this evening. A large group of our children made us all incredibly proud. Our choir, dancers and orchestra members were simply amazing - incredible in fact! We know that this will be an event that they will remember for a long, long time. Lots of our staff team went along as did our children‘s parents and wider families. We were all blown away by the quality and I have received so many positive comments since. I really do hope that more children in our school will want to join the choir, dance club and perhaps even the orchestra in the future.

Well done to everyone concerned and a huge thank you to HMS and BPSM staff and volunteers - you have worked so hard and should be so proud. A special thank you to Mrs Irons, Miss Khan and Mrs Osborne for rehearsing with our children - as usual you and the children have surpassed our expectations.

  • Year 4 Roman Day

Mon 19 Jun 2017 Miss Corcoran
Today was Roman Day in Year 4 & we even had the Roman weather to go with it! The children looked absolutely fab in their outfits and really got into the activities. In the morning, we learnt about mosaics, finding out abut why the Romans had them and how they were made. We then created our own using coloured card - the outcomes were great! In the afternoon, we looked at Roman and Celt shields, thinking about the symbolism of the designs. We then designed our own, using metallic paint to add vibrant colour. We have had a great day and look forward to learning more about Celts & Romans in the next few weeks.
