  • Year 5 and 6 WWII Day

Mon 28 Sep 2015 Miss Collins

Today, the Year 5 and 6 children travelled back in time to the 1940's and took part in a variety of WWII style activities as part of their Evacuation Day. These activities included: gardening, sewing, cooking and an army assault course. Everyone looked fantastic dressed up in old fashioned clothing and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Take a look at our pictures to see what we got up to!

  • Visit to Festival Place

Fri 25 Sep 2015 Mrs Barnhouse

Mrs Davis and I took 8 children to Festival Place this morning as part of Basingstoke's Recycling Week. Great Binfields entered a competition for local schools to produce a recycled bouquet. Lots of children have spent their lunch times or afternoons helping sort all the materials brought in by children, which were then beautifully transformed into an extremely colourful, vibrant bouquet. We were keen not to add 'artificial colour' such as paint and pens and use materials as they came in...fruit shoots have certainly been a great addition to the bouquet! We handed in our bouquet which will be on display at Festival Place next week (in the shop next to the old Tiger Tiger. Keep your eyes on our website for more information).

The 8 children who visited Festival Place to find out more about their recycling system had a great morning. There was certainly lots to take in, and going behind the doors to the 'other side' we saw how all the rubbish from the shops, offices and restaurants is sorted, packed and sent off around the world! Even the food is recycled and turned back into water that we can drink! (There children weren't too sure about this!)

  • School Council Chair and Vice Chair Results Are In!

Sun 13 Sep 2015 Miss Rogers

Wow what a close election result it was this year! Each of the four candidates did so well - their campaigns and speeches were excellent.

I am pleased to announce that Thomas is the Chair of this year's School Council and his Vice is Mollie. I know that Emily and Rhys will have been disappointed not to have been successful but they will of course be School Councillors for the year.

Their first meeting will take place early next week after they have received some training. We look forward to working with you all to make our school even better!

  • Ofsted News - Our Report is Out!!

Thu 10 Sep 2015 Miss Rogers

I hope you all got a text alerting you to an email we sent reading the publication of our Ofsted report.

We are really pleased with the result and we hope you are too. It makes happy reading and I am incredibly proud of the children and staff at Great Binfields Primary School.

A copy of our new report can be found in 'Key Information' under the 'Policies and Statements' section.

The report will be posted on Ofsted's own website 4 working days from now.

  • Expectations Meetings

Thu 10 Sep 2015 Miss Rogers

Thank you to all of you who attended our two Expectation Information Evenings this week and thank you for your positive feedback. We hope that you all feel well informed of what you expect from us as a whole school, what to expect regarding your child/ren's year group, what we will be expecting from our families and the children themselves of course.

As promised, the presentations are now in our 'Parents' section under the 'Workshop Information and Useful Guides' tab.

  • School Council Election Day

Thu 10 Sep 2015 Miss Rogers

This week has been Democracy week at Great Binfields Primary School.

Our class School Councillors have been elected and they will of course attend the weekly meetings. We were very impressed by some of their speeches. We could see that most of the children who stood for the position had prepared carefully. The successful candidates will receive some training before taking up their posts by previous school councillors.

Today is our school elections for Chair and Vice Chair of our School Council. The children are in years 5 and 6. They have prepared their election campaigns so well which included creating banners and posters to go around school. Today they each spoke to the whole school in assembly. They spoke so confidently and answered the questions posed very well.  They also showed great resilience as we had a technical hitch and this did not phase them at all!

Thank you to everyone who stood for our elections. It shows that you really care and want to help make our school an even better one. We would also like to thank one of our governors, our Vice Chair, Mr Mike Nicholls who helps us run the elections. He also talked to the children late last week about what qualities a good school councillors has and will develop throughout the year.

We look forward to finding out the results!

  • Feeling Green? Something for Everyone!

Sun 06 Sep 2015 Mrs Barnhouse

Great Binfields have recently registered to become an eco-school. This means we will be working hard over the coming months and years to gain eco-status!

Eco-schools is 'an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life.'

Keep your eyes on the website for upcoming activities we will be involved in, in order to gain our green status. If you would like to find out more about the programme visit www.eco-schools.org.uk

In the meantime, why not get involved with friends and family during Basingstoke's Green Week, running from 19th-27th September. Have a look at the leaflet to see which activities you and your family might want to get involved in! Let us know what you think! Find the leaflet here.

  • WOW - Walk to School Initiative

Fri 04 Sep 2015 Miss Rogers

We are excited to tell you about a new walk to school project that our school will be running this year with national charity Living Streets and Basingstoke Borough Council.

    Who is involved?

Selected schools in Basingstoke have been invited to participate in the project which encourages pupils and their families to walk to school at least once a week through an initiative called WoW.

    What is WoW?

WoW is a scheme run by Living Streets, the charity behind the national Walk to School campaign, which encourages families to walk to school at least once a week. At the end of each month, children who walked at least once every week will receive a special collectable pin badge. There is a different badge to collect for each month of the school year, for 2015/16 the theme of the badges is Our Healthy Planet.

Please go to the Children's section of our website and click on 'Travelling to School Safely'. In there is a PDF leaflet that you can download which contains more information about the scheme.
