  • Fencing for Year Four

Tue 29 Jan 2019 Miss Hanafin

This morning the Year 4 children had a brilliant taster session for Fencing! We spoke about how this is a really special opportunity as not many children or adults get to have a go at this sport. There were lots of skills to learn and pick up quite quickly as well as information about keeping ourselves and others safe. Can you remember the start position and the special phrase that goes with it? It was really important to lunge and strike only the torso. Even the adults found remembering footwork quite tricky - lots of perseverance all round!

Thank you to Premier Sport for the fantastic session, the children really loved trying something different.

  • Indoor Athletics for Years 5/6

Thu 24 Jan 2019 Ms Rogers

Our team did remarkably well last week when they represented our school in a number of athletic events such as target throw, javelin, sprints, relays, standing long jump and triple long jump. Our children were up for beating their personal bests each time and it was great seeing them so chuffed when they achieved this. Our children showed great camaraderie too which was so lovely to see as they genuinely wanted each other to do so well. Thank you to our parents who came and supported the children too—it means a lot. Thanks to Phil Jeffs for organising this event and to Costello who hosted. I thoroughly enjoyed being there to support them.

  • Individual Table Tennis Competition!

Wed 16 Jan 2019 Miss Hunt

Yesterday, eight fantastic children took part in Basingstoke and Deane’s under 11 individual table tennis competition. The children played against several opponents from different schools around Hampshire and were able to compete with skill and confidence. Some of the other children attending the competition are current County Champions in table tennis, so I was extremely proud of our children as they showed SUPERB growth mindset and perseverance. They really should feel delighted with themselves. After the main matches had been played, the children were grouped into a ‘main group’ and a ‘consolation’ group. Liberty and Sienna both made it to the final of the girls’ consolation group with Sienna just pipping Liberty to the post to win the girls consolation category. Fin made it all the way to the semi-final of the boy’s consolation group and played brilliantly. Orla and Curtis competed extremely well and progressed to the main group of the competitions where they faced some tough contenders. Both children held their heads very high and represented Great Binfields extremely well. Connor, Olli and Tallulah also played with fantastic confidence and skill but were unlucky with some of their matched competitors. Thank you for those parents who attended and supported their children. It was lovely to see the pride of your faces too! A big thank you to Ms Rogers too who taught my class for the day, allowing me to take the children along to participate.

  • Year Four and Mount Everest

Fri 11 Jan 2019 Miss Hanafin

Year Four have had a busy week launching our Extreme Earth topic. We started it off on Wednesday with a shelter building task. We went out into the woodland and used our resources to create a shelter that could withstand heavy rain and strong winds. Ash and Pine mixed up and it was great to see the children working as a team, strategy planning and showing high levels of determination. Mr Wood and Mrs Ellis were very impressed. Having completed some research on Mount Everest, we began writing diary entries as if we had just arrived at Base Camp. We did some of our writing in tents, imagining what it would be like to reflect on our travels after a long day. To round the week off, we were lucky enough to have a visit from Mr Clark who has completed the challenge of climbing Mount Everest. He delivered a fantastic talk all about his experiences which taught us all an incredible amount. He talked to us about the conditions, the training, the prep, the risks and hazards of such an amazing climb. He also showed us some of the kit he used for the climb. We will be using his talk to inspire our future diary entries and will even be sending him a few of our best to review.

What a brilliant start to the half term! Have a look at the pictures to see what we got up to.

Happy New Year Everyone! Let’s hope that 2019 brings our school community much happiness.

It will be lovely seeing you all on Tuesday morning (8th January) and I hope our children are looking forward to catching up with their friends too. We have all had a good break and I hope that is the case for you all too. Let’s hope our children settle back into our school routines well as we have lots of great learning opportunities and activities planned for this Spring 1 half term. I also hope the children are very much looking forward to their new topics.
