• Year 4 Maths Challenge

  Four of our wonderful Year 4 Mathematician's travelled to St Gabriel's School in Newbury today to represent Great Binfields at the Mathematics Challenge for 2024. They had a fantastic time completing a range of activities including playing dicey dicey, using Tangrams to make specific shapes, magic number, and domino challenges too.   

   

  They worked collaboratively in partners to achieve wonderful success and most importantly, they had great fun doing it. They should be extremely proud of their accomplishments today, we are lucky to have so many great Mathematicians at our school. Well done all of you, you should be very proud of yourself - thank you for representing Great Binfields!

  

• Year 6 - Hampton Court Trip

  The Year 6 children thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Hampton Court Palace today and will hopefully be coming home with lots of new facts that they learnt throughout the day. The children were shocked by the sheer size and grandeur of the palace but equally loved exploring the meaning behind some of the more intricate details too.

   

  The children were incredibly well behaved throughout the trip and enjoyed retracing Henry VIII’s steps through the never-ending corridors. Particular highlights included Henry VIII’s kitchens and peeking down into the Royal Chapel, where the heart of one of Henry’s wives heart is said to be buried. I wonder if the children can remember which one it was and can tell you more? The children were also infatuated with learning about previous ghost sightings and tales of two of Henry’s wives.

   

  Alongside exploring the palace, itself, the children took part in an intriguing workshop called ‘Investigating Henry’. This session, which was led by the staff at Hampton Court, encouraged the children to think critically and evaluate a variety of primary and secondary sources to help them understand more about the type of man Henry was. Using replica artefacts and excerpts from contemporary Tudor sources, the children were curious to weigh up the evidence and construct a balanced opinion of Henry VIII by asking key enquiry questions. It was fascinating to find out that there was more to Henry VIII than the popular stereotypes!

   

  We are sure that the children will be eager to share the facts they have learnt and describe the array of artefacts witnessed throughout the trip as the children demonstrated such excitement and a genuine love of learning, immersing themselves in Tudor life within the walls of Hampton Court Palace. • Parent Reading Afternoon

  A huge thank you to all of the parents who came in this afternoon to read with the children. It was so lovely to see the children so excited about the stories they were sharing with you. We look forward to the next reading session next half term.

  

• Year 6 Bikeability

  This week, Year 6 have absolutely loved taking part in their Road Safety proficiency sessions delivered by the Hampshire Bikeability team. Despite the freezing cold weather, it thankfully remained dry and beautifully sunny which allowed the children to maximise their time cycling on the road. Thank you for ensuring that your child came to school wearing lots of layers so that they could enjoy their sessions much more too. The children were able to thaw out in between sessions and even enjoyed a warm hot chocolate on Friday thanks to our PTA team.

   

  At the beginning of the week, the children learned about some of the essential checks necessary to ensuring their bike was safe before setting off on their journey, including the ABCD check – air, breaks, chain and drop out. Following on from this, the children learned how to confidently signal, how to perform a U-turn in the road and how to safely exit a junction using the 'Primary Position Prevents People Passing’ strategy amongst other road safety skills. The children were incredibly polite and sensible throughout the week and were able to follow clear instructions before practising the manoeuvres themselves. The children will bring home their road cycling proficiency certificate this evening and will be able to explain all of the different elements that they learned this week. The certificates are individualised for each child and show how confident and independent they are when cycling safely on the road in each of the different areas. Please do make sure you take a look at this certificate before allowing your child to ride independently on the road without an adult.

   

  We have seen a fantastic level of resilience and determination from all of our riders this week and we are so proud of the accomplishments and progression that they have made from their individual starting points. It has been lovely to see so many children feeling more confident when cycling on the road – even in some busy areas.

• Year 2 Titanic Day

  On Monday 8th January, Year 2 welcomed Divergent Drama to Great Binfields to lead us in some learning about our new topic - the Titanic!

  The day began with the children discovering some key information and dates about the famous ship. During this time we were given some items that represented passengers from the different classes. Some children then acted out scenes that would have been common on board, such as eating in the 1st class dining room, working in the boiler room and even engineering the Titanic before it set sail from Belfast. 

   

  During the afternoon, the children enjoyed beginning our new book 'Samson's Titanic' and found out even more facts about the Titanic. We were really impressed with the questions that the children asked and the discussions that were had. We are looking forward to exploring this topic even more over the coming weeks.
