  • Year 2 outdoor week

    Fri 15 Jul 2022

We have certainly been making the most of the weather this week. Year 2 have had their outdoor week where we have taken part in many outdoor activities. We have had a forest school session every day where we have been able to explore the woods and learn new skills. We made log dogs and brooms using our knotting skills and we even learnt how to make a fire!

When we haven't been in forest school we have been doing various activities including outdoor music, sketching near the pond, minibeast hunts and orienteering.

It is safe to say we have had lots of fun!

  • Year 5 Dig up the Past

Tue 12 Jul 2022 Mrs Osborne

Today, the children in Year 5 became archaeologists and unearthed what is believed to be an Anglo Saxon burial site. They discovered the skeleton of what looks to be a man, surrounded by coins and precious gems. This has led them to believe it could be the grave of an Anglo Saxon king. During their English lessons for the rest of the week, they will be writing a formal report of the dig. Take a look at the photos to see what they got up to…

  • Year 3 Stone Age Day

    Tue 12 Jul 2022

Wow! What a day. The children looked so fantastic streaming across the courtyard in their amazing Stone Age costumes, as they came into school this morning. It really helped to bring buzz and excitement to the day.

To start, the children selected their Stone Age names and decided upon symbols to best represent them. We then used careful peeling and cutting skills to prep the vegetables for our stew. Later, we headed into the woodlands to build dens and 'hunt and gather' to survive. The children really got into role and were using their learning to explain what each thing they had scavenged would be used for e.g. 'heated' stones to warm water for cooking.

After lunch we were able to join Mr Wood back in the woods to sample the Stone Age stew. We then headed back inside to build our clay Stone Age houses. The children showed incredible resilience when working with the clay, especially as it was drying out quickly in the heat.

It has been a wonderful day. We hope the children had a fantastic day and enjoy their rest (and cooling off) tonight. Have a look at the pictures to see what we got up to.

  • SCL taster sessions

    Fri 08 Jul 2022 Mrs H

Thank you to Josh and his team for leading SCL Active taster sessions for us all today on possibly one of the hottest days of the year! We had a fantastic time and used our school values to show respect, resilience and sportsmanship. Lots of us are already keen to take part in the summer club

'Active World' which is being hosted here at our very own GBPS! Book here: https://sclactive.co.uk/find-a-venue/

  • Year 3 Science Week

    Fri 08 Jul 2022 Mrs H

This week our theme has been 'deforestation'. We have learnt all about the devastating impact this can have on our precious planet. We completed a range of activities including:

    -Designing a bug hotel

-Creating a poster about 'perfect pollination' and thinking about our precious insects and their habitats

    -Writing a non-chronological report

-Creating a tree through ink blowing against a watercolour wash

-Having a live visit from the Indoor Rainforest

We finished our week on a high when we met with our buddy classes for the week in EYFS and shared what we had been up to with them! Thanks Miss Canfield for planning a smashing Science week for us all!

  • Science week at Great Binfields

    Fri 08 Jul 2022

Well we have certainly had an exciting week at Great Binfields this week. The whole school have had Science week. This year the theme was 'growing our future.' We have been looking at the damage humans have had on the environment and what we can do to help. Each year group had a different focus including, plastic pollution, deforestation and air pollution. We had various visitors in to discuss these issues. We have been blown aware with the support from local scientists and organisations who have taken their time to come in and lead activities and talks with the children. We would like to say a big thank you to all of them for  their time and effort to add a real life context to the children's understanding.

Walking round the school this week has been really exciting, seeing the children so engaged and passionate about the Science they are learning about. It has been lovely to see such a variety of experiments and investigations taking place. We are already excited for the next Science week.

  • Year 3 Listen2Me concert

    Fri 08 Jul 2022 Mrs H

We had another Listen2Me concert with the lovely Mrs Vaughan yesterday, this time showcasing our Ukelele skills! We did some: singing, body percussion and super strumming! We also compared the parts of a Ukelele to body parts in a super snappy song! Thank you so much to those of you who were able to come and cheer us on - it was lovely to have a full Hall once more! I know Year Three will really miss their Listen2Me sessions but how lucky they are to have experienced them for this entire academic year. As always, a huge thank you and well done to Mrs Vaughan for her efforts, we are so incredibly grateful for all she does for us.

  • Year 6 Science Visits

    Thu 07 Jul 2022

Science Week has been jam packed with exciting opportunities for our Year 6 children! We launched the week with a trip to Costello School, where the children took part in an activity to assess their carbon footprint. They discussed ways they could improve their impact on the environment and carefully considered small improvements which could have a big impact, including: turning off lights, walking to school where possible, using more public transport, thoughtful recycling and trying not to eat as much meat in their diet. I wonder if the children are already putting some of these changes into place at home. The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring this topic within the science lab setting and we’d like to say a big thank you to Mr Gould for hosting our children throughout the day.

On Wednesday, we welcomed two students from Southampton University who encouraged the children to explore a range of different scientific vocabulary such as spiral galaxy. They then embedded their growing knowledge in a fun game of Pictionary. The children also investigated a game where they explored space debris and other items located in space. This was a wonderful extension of our Space topic in Autumn 2 and the children felt lucky to conduct these activities with two fantastic role models.

To finish off the week, the children had the opportunity to reverse their role and became experts in our science week focus - air pollution. The children have been fascinated by this topic and enjoyed learning about this vast issue, including: ‘The Great Fog’ that swept across London in 1952, the many different naturally occurring and man-made air pollutants (such as methane, sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide) and how face masks can reduce the impact of air pollution. Throughout the week, the children worked incredibly hard to create their very own group presentation which sought to inform their audience about all they had learned. The children delivered their presentations to year groups across the school with great confidence and enthusiasm and it was lovely to see them take on the role of the teacher to inform others about their findings.

What an amazing Science Week we’ve had! Year 6 would like to say a big thank you to Miss Canfield who organised our lovely visitors, trips and learning focus for this week – we’ve had a blast!
