  • Year 1 display their farming learning for all to see

Tue 28 Sep 2021 Ms Rogers

Our Year 1 children have been learning lots about farming and where our food comes from since the start of term. We are delighted that this is being showcased at our local Chineham Library. Our children are ensuring that their work is of an excellent quality. Consideration of authentic outcomes and wider audiences is something we have been working on as a whole school so we enable our children and the public to critique their own and others work. We believe this rounds off the learning process well leading to our children give their best, a real sense of achievement and pride.

  • Year 5 French Day

Mon 27 Sep 2021 Mrs Osborne

Year 5 have been enjoying their current topic 'Ooh La La' which looks at different aspects of French life, culture, geography and history. Obviously a topic about France wouldn't be complete without trying some French delicacies!

The children took part in a French food tasting session where they tried foods such as croissants, brie and creme caramel. They had to write a short description of each food using their senses and then give it a mark out of 5.

They also had a visit from Miss Brookes who helped them to make Croque Monsieur. To make it more challenging, the instructions Miss Brookes provided were in French, but the children did a great job of working out what they said!

Did you know that if you add a fried egg to the top of a Croque Monsieur, it becomes a Croque Madame?

  • Harvest at St Mary's

Fri 24 Sep 2021 Ms Rogers

Today our children had a wonderfully bright and sunny walk to Basing so that we could have our Harvest Festival at St Mary's Church. We would like to say a big thank you to Rev. Heather, the kind church warden and the talented organist as we received a lovely service. Rev. Heather's words and prayers really made us reflect on the food that is put before us and think as well as thank everyone involved in that process. We realised that hundreds of people are involved in ensuring we have breakfast each morning for example  - we are helped by the farmers, shop keepers, the lorry drivers, etc! Some of our children shared their harvest art work which was super and some read parts of the bible and prayers so well too.

Our walk as I said was bright and sunny filled with birdsong. We also noticed that the seasons are changing - Autumn is definitely coming!

  • World Peace Day

Wed 22 Sep 2021 Ms Rogers

Today we are celebrating World Peace Day together. at GBP and each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.

In 2021, as we start to heal from the COVID-19 pandemic, we are all inspired to think creatively and collectively about how to help everyone recover better, how to build resilience, and how to transform our world into one that is more equal, more just, equitable, inclusive, sustainable, and healthier.

Our children described what peace meant to them and they created some beautiful doves to fly in our courtyard. At the end of the day we played peaceful music at home time for our whole school community to listen to and reflect.

  • Year 1 Farm Visit!

    Mon 20 Sep 2021 Miss O'Hagan

The children in Year 1 really enjoyed and learned so much today from Mill Cottage Farm. The two farmers brought their animals which included: goats, pigs, rabbits, sheep and more! They even brought their cute sheep dog for us to meet. The children asked so many great questions as well as answered lots of the questions posed too. This visit really helps our Year 1 children get into their 'Food and Farming' topic. As you can imagine, they absolutely loved grooming and petting our visitors! It was great to see. Can you remember any facts we learnt from our visit? Such as, the name of a female goat, chicken, pig and sheep? We are really pleased with the politeness the children showed towards the visitors. We were very lucky that the sun was shining brightly too!

  • Year 6 WW2 Day - quick that's the air raid siren!

    Mon 20 Sep 2021

Today, Year 6 experienced what life would have been like as an evacuee during our World War II themed day. The children took part in a variety of different activities including sewing, medal making, gardening, army drills and an Anderson Shelter experience. The children were able to empathise with how civilians would have felt when they heard the air raid siren and discuss how difficult it must have been to be in a constant state of alert. It was also so lovely to hear some of the personal stories that the children were willing to share about their relative’s experiences during the war, no matter their role or age at the time. We certainly have some heroic relatives in our year group.

The children looked fantastic in their evacuee style costumes and had clearly put in a lot of effort to fully embrace our topic themed day. Several children also brought in family artefacts such as genuine WW2 ration books, a soldier’s metal helmet and a set of commemorative badges as part of their outfit. The other children were in awe of these authentic artefacts, which was fantastic to see.

The Year 6 children have been enthusiastic about the history of WW2 so far this term and we cannot wait to delve deeper in our historical enquiry as the term develops.

  • GBPS Values

    Thu 16 Sep 2021

Aspire, Cooperation, Creativity, Honesty, Resilience and Respect.

These six words are our Great Binfields values - the values that underpin everything we do here in school. This stems right the way from how we plan and organise our curriculum, how we communicate our learning, the play choices we make, the way we celebrate our differences and so much more.

We are so excited to have these wonderful new posters up and around school that showcase our values. Those of you that have looked carefully will also notice some other words in the leaves - these are taken from our new concepts that each year group will be working on throughout their topics. The concepts are an exciting new venture at Great Binfields, so keep your eyes peeled for more on this soon. We chose ones that link perfectly to our values to share on our tree, representing how we are all growing and learning together. We think the poster really has that 'Great Binfields feel', do you agree?

The children have been discussing their values and concepts in class and we have loved hearing them pointing out each other's creativity, resilience and respect as just a few examples. Perhaps you will have a discussion at home about what values you are demonstrating? Perhaps you will share with your adults at home what concepts you are exploring in your learning?

  • Show Racism the Red Card workshops

Mon 13 Sep 2021 Mrs Franklin

Today Years 4, 5 and 6 all took part in Show Racism the Red Card workshops. The aims of the workshops were:

    • To educate young people about the causes and consequences of racism and to explore the various forms racism can take.

    • To empower young people to challenge racism in the communities in which they live, providing them with relevant knowledge and information to enable them to do this.

    • To help young people prepare to play an active role as citizens in an increasingly multi-cultural society.

    • To enable young people to develop good relationships and respect the differences between people, regardless of their ethnicity, faith, culture or nationality.

The children got a huge amount from the sessions and gave many thoughtful contributions. It gave them a safe forum to have discussions and ask questions that they may not usually feel as confident about. The children were very engaged and we were really proud of their attitudes towards the sensitive topics being discussed.

  • Day 3 at Stone Farm

Thu 09 Sep 2021 Miss Lyddon

There was lots of rain in the night and the rain stopped enough for us to get our farm duties completed this morning. Phew!!!

After breakfast, we got back on the coach and minibus and headed to Plymouth for a day exploring sea creatures at the aquarium. Plymouth was about an hour away from Stone Farm. The clouds were really low over the hills and moorland.

Our day started at Plymouth aquarium, where we were met by the Education Team. We split into our 2 classes and had a tour of the aquarium. We saw starfish, sharks, an octopus, turtle, and many more exciting creatures. We had our lunch, before we headed to Mount Batten Beach. Here we met our  Education Guides from the aquarium again. They set us up with rock pooling equipment and identification cards. With our wellies and coats on, we explored the many rockpools. We had a great time finding small crabs, baby star fish and shrimps.

Here is the website if you would like to investigate more. https://www.national-aquarium.co.uk/

Back at Stone Farm it was raining heavily, so we had some free time before tea.

  • Stone Farm Day 2 Eden Project

    Wed 08 Sep 2021

Although it has been raining at times today here in Devon, we have had the most amazing day at the Eden Project. At the Eden project, we had a workshop called 'Rainforest Detectives'. Here we had to find different ways to survive in the rainforest, by discovering aspects of the Biodomes. We had three categories - shelter, food and medicine/health.

We did achieve the highest point of the Biodome too and enjoyed trekking across the wobbly bridge at the top, which gave us a great view of the leafy canopy below.

Once back in our Eden classroom, the children had to present their findings. The knowledge they gained today will definitely come in handy for their Walk on the Wild Side topic later on in Year 5.

Once back on the farm, the children had some free time before dinner followed by a fantastic falconry display.
