  • Open the Book at Great Binfields

Sat 28 Apr 2018 Ms Rogers

Open the Book is an assembly programme backed by The Bible Society and has been running at our school on a Monday afternoon for our EYFS and KS1 children for 5 years.

This programme involves a group of volunteers (from a number of churches across Basingstoke) going into the schools and acting out a bible story – with our children’s help..

The children get a whistle stop tour through the bible with an assembly for all the key Old Testament bible characters, from Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham and Moses, to David, Daniel and Nehemiah. Then the story of Jesus is told in more detail from his birth, childhood, baptism, the calling of the disciples, his teaching and miracles to the events of Holy week and his ascension.

Our younger children love the stories and look forward to our weekly Open the Book assemblies, as they love having the chance to take part or as a whole audience making sound effects!

  • Year 2 Subway visit

    Fri 27 Apr 2018
Year 2 had an exciting visit from Subway today. We have been looking at healthy eating and how much fat is in certain products. Year 2 have been carrying out a project all week where they had to create a low fat sandwich. We were very surprised with how much fat certain items had in them. Subway then came in to discuss this further and we were even able to make our very own design! We were taught the correct way to make a Subway sandwich and how to wrap them safely so that we could take them home. Year 2 had a brilliant time and we learnt lots about what is in the food we eat.
  • Author Visit at GBP

Thu 26 Apr 2018 Ms Rogers

This afternoon our KS1 children met a real author called Sue Lawrence and she shared her latest book with our children. Her inspiration for writing the story book has come from her very own pet cat. Our children loved listening to the story and had a lot of questions to ask her afterwards. We hope that our children are now thinking that they too can become an author in the future... perhaps they will have a pet in the next few years that inspires them to write a super story.

Thank you Sue for coming to our school to share your hard work - our children certainly loved having you visit.

  • First Ever School Band Started Today

Thu 26 Apr 2018 Mrs Irons
At lunchtime today a selection of our super musicians met together for their first ever rehearsal with Mrs Irons. They learned about the setting up procedures of a band,  how to watch the conductor and managed to play a few notes of their first piece of music too. We can't wait to see them develop the band - watch or should I say listen to this space!!

Sun 22 Apr 2018 Miss Rendall
A wonderful time was had by all! Here are some more photos of our time away.
  • Our last day at Stone Farm....

Fri 20 Apr 2018 Miss Lyddon

After packing our cases and placing them outside, ready for our driver to put all of our belongings on the coach, we were allowed our last free time with the animals. It was lovely watching the children interact with each other, showing great care and compassion to all of the animals, and most of all smiling from ear to ear.

Finally, we had our last breakfast of pancakes...then it was time to leave Stone Farm. A great big thank you to Mr and Mrs Hatton for allowing both Ash and Pine Classes stay at the farm and for their super hospitalility. A fun packed week...and great fun.

On our way home we stopped at Lyford Gorge for our last adventure before returning to school

  • Year 1 Clay Workshop

Thu 19 Apr 2018 Miss Lemar
Yesterday Year 1 experienced another of our yearly highlights. Not only was the sun out but we got to do a clay workshop with a local artist called Fatima. As our current topic is The Secret Garden she designed our clay learning around this. Everybody learnt to coil (this involves making a pancake shape and attaching sausages to it) to form a clay pot. Can you remember the name of the liquid that kept the clay together? The reason we all made a pot is so that we can keep something top secret in it, just like the garden is a secret that we are learning about. On the lid of the pot the children created a cactus using photographs of them for inspiration. Finally we painted our pots and are now patiently waiting for them to dry before we add a second coat. A wonderful experience for the children to work alongside a professional artist and to find out that she always makes mistakes with her artwork too!
  • Plymouth Aquarium today for our Year 4s

Thu 19 Apr 2018 Ms Rogers

Today our children are at The Plymouth Aquarium and we have been sent a few photos of the whole group in action for you. See below!!

The children will be touring the aquarium first with a guide and for many it will be a really great awe and wonder moment as this is their first time going to such a place.  This afternoon they will be doing a classification rock pooling study nearby - a workshop led by Aquarium staff. The kids can not wait.

Miss Lyddon, who previously mentioned the poor signal down there, has had difficulty uploading photographs... but she will keep trying. We will certainly make sure that all of them are uploaded when the children are back and we have decent wifi.

  • Our falconry display at Stone Farm

Wed 18 Apr 2018 Miss Lyddon
On Wednesday evening, we all went into one of Mr Hatton's barns for a falconry display. It was great fun seeing the birds of prey, and owls, fly around the barn, swoop down for the food and sit on the high ledges watching us, watching them. Wow! another memory maker for the children.
  • Our day at The Eden Project

Wed 18 Apr 2018 Miss Lyddon

WOW!!! What an amazing day. Our day started by exploring the outside of the Biodomes in the grounds of the Eden Project. We spotted some interesting sculptures amongst the plants, flowers and trees. There were even three cows on the roof! After lunch we had a workshop called 'Puzzling Plants'. Here, we were plant detectives finding the different plants in the Rainforest Biodome (The biggest one). It was great fun and VERY HOT! At the top of the Biodome, we found a wobbly bridge and a bridge with a cloud maker on it. It was great fun. We pretended that we were in the jungle.

Back at Stone Farm, we had free time with the animals before tea.

Tonight we are having a falconry talk and display by one of Mr Hatton's friends. We will keep you updated with our adventures.

(I am having trouble up loading pictures tonight - will try again in the morning. Good night)
