  • Farm Visit for Years 1 and 2

Thu 13 Nov 2014 Mrs Barnhouse

On Thursday 13th November Miller’s Ark Farm came to visit Years 1 and 2. This was linked to our current topic, Foods, Farms and Festivals. We met the farmers who told us about being quiet and sensible around the animals before we were taken around each pen. At each stop the farmers told us some information about the animals. We found out about pigs, goats, sheep, ducks and hens to name but a few! The farmers asked us questions about what types of food or resources we got from each animal (which we were pretty good at answering!) Did you know that feathers, which are used in pillows, come from just under the wing of a duck?

We were allowed to carefully stroke the animals. It was really interesting to feel how deep a sheep’s wool goes. Even though it was a little bit wet and dirty on top, the wool was lovely and warm underneath. It really helped us to understand why we use wool to make jumpers!

It was a great day and we all certainly had a lot of fun, whilst learning some interesting facts.

There is so much we could now write about from this visit. Year 2 will be writing a recount of the visit before writing thank you letters to the farmers, explaining what our favourite parts of the day were. Year 1 will be working with clay to create a farm animal whilst also finding out more about where our food comes from.

Have a look at the photos below to see all the other animals we met!

  • Woodland Fun for Sycamore and Willow Girls

Thu 13 Nov 2014 Miss Rogers

This afternoon year 3 and 4 girls enjoyed their first woodland activities afternoon with Mr Wood and I. They were given the challenge of creating a woodland mobile or a wind chime. The girls used natural items brought in from home and of course natural materials from our woodland  to create these wonderful creative pieces (but we did sneak in some buttons and beads too)! The girls worked well in their groups and they definitely practiced their cooperation skills. The end results were amazing and they proudly showed their creations to the boys afterwards.

Last term the Year3 and 4 boys had fun making their woodland monsters with us, as outlined in one of our newsletters. They too learned lots from the experience and enjoyed it immensely.

Both groups can't wait for their second adventure...we are very much excited too but they will have to wait for a while as we would like to work with other year groups... I wonder which group will be working with Miss Rogers and Mr Wood next time? You shall just have to wait and see.

I would like to thank Mr Wood for helping me to make this super initiative possible.

  • Poppy Day - We Will Remember

Tue 11 Nov 2014 Miss Rogers

Today our children marked their respect by making 2 poppies to be displayed just outside our courtyard area. One was for past service men and women and civilians who lost their lives due to past wars and the children made the second for our current men and women who serve our country presently.

Lots of thought provoking work has taken place this week so our children understand the significance of this special time. We also had a special service led by Miss Khan where we took part in the minutes silence.

  • School Council at Basingstoke Remembrance Parade

Sun 09 Nov 2014 Miss Rogers

I would like to thank the members of our School Council who joined Miss Khan and I today as they represented our school beautifully. All 6 children joined in with the special service so well - saying the prayers outlined in the order of service and singing the hymns as well as listening very carefully to what was being said by the Reverend leading the service and the dignitaries who were present. Amelie and Jess, our Chair and Vice Chair of the School Council laid a poppy wreath along with other children who were also representing their schools today.

This will become a Great Binfields tradition as it is very important to us to mark our respect for those people who served and for those men and women who are currently serving our country to ensure that we all live a free life.

  • WW1 Centenary Show and Workshops

Fri 07 Nov 2014 Miss Rogers
Today we all made poppies to create our own display to mark and show our respect for the hundreds of thousands of men who lost their lives during the World War I. Groundlings Theatre outreach team from Fareham came into school to share a play based around the conflict for Years 2-6 and then Year3-6 had a workshop where they learned more about this very sad era in our British History.
  • Library Visits

Tue 04 Nov 2014 Miss Rogers
The children have very much enjoyed going to our local library recently where they have had the opportunity to meet one the librarians, listen to a story, learn some library skills and then take out books if they have a library card. We aim to take the children to the library every term so that they develop that love of reading. Thank you to Chineham library for your support. We look forward to seeing you again shortly.
  • Year 6 to Stubbington

Mon 03 Nov 2014 Miss Rogers
Our year 6 pupils really enjoyed and got a huge amount out of their residential trip to Stubbington just before half term. Check out the photos below and have a look at their trip display which is situated in the Year5/6 shared area.
